Confirmed: Wolves announce player departure

Tuesday 20th February 2018

Joe Mason has completed a switch to the MLS, with the Wolverhampton Wanderers forward heading to Colorado Rapids on-loan until the end of the season.

Wolves have moved to confirm on their official website that Mason has departed Molineux, with the forward set for a temporary switch to Colorado for their 2018 campaign.

Mason arrived at Molineux in January 2016, and went on to make 39 appearances for Wolves, scoring seven goals for the Sky Bet Championship outfit.

This season, the 26-year-old’s opportunities became limited, as he suffered from Nuno Espirito Santo’s ‘revolution’ at Molineux, with Wolves competing for promotion in the Championship.

Mason has failed to make an appearance for Wolves this season in any competition, and spent the first-half of the season away from Molineux, on-loan with Burton Albion across the Championship.

The forward made seven appearances for Nigel Clough’s side during the first-half of the season, scoring one goal, which came in the 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday back in August.

Mason departs Molineux with Wolves top of the Championship table, with Nuno’s side currently holding an 11-point lead at the top of the table.

The Verdict

Like many of the squad Nuno inherited at Molineux, Mason has struggled to convince his new boss, who has padded his squad with some extreme talent.

Sitting on the sidelines at Molineux following his spell with Burton, Mason has done the right thing in moving on, with a move to the MLS an exciting opportunity for the 26-year-old.

A Malky signing that made a profit.

Can’t fault that.

Manager signed him.

Can’t say Malky signed Velikonja but not Mason.

Manager has final say Wez. We can’t pick and choose which parts we use. That’s not what us Red Brigade / Tan lovers do.

You can if it’s correct though. I have no idea either way but have read here that ridsdale had a big influence with bringing mason here, and didn’t milky say it was him watching velikonja?

I dare say that Riddler made a recommendation about Mason as someone did about Velikonja.

Final decision rested with Malky.

You are right too Malky said he had been watching Velikonja at Watford which makes it even more baffling he didn’t play him. Same happened with Bradford.

Malkys first season Mason was absolute class. I think Arsenal were in for him at one stage

The only element that was missing from his game couldn't be coached. Pace.

Simply he he didn't have that top end speed to take him away.

To say he didn't finish well, in my opinion anyway, wasn't true.

Totally agree, I this day to be a forward you mostly need either pace or power and he had neither.

3m was unbelievable deal although at the time some people couldn't help knock the club.

Personally, I wish him luck - I always thought he finished pretty well, but a lack of pace was his obvious downfall. He'll always be remembered for that goal against Liverpool in Carling Cup Final.

As s striker you need one of those attributes or you need to be an expert finisher.

It was very noticeable in his last season with us how easily he got knocked off the ball.

In his first season I thought his movement was excellent and he finished well too.
