Manchester United website gaffe appears to confirm ex-Cardiff City boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as new manager

Former Cardiff City boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears to have been confirmed as Manchester United's interim manager after a website gaffe.

Solskjaer, a United favourite, has been widely reported as the man replacing Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford on an interim basis until the end of the season.

At which point, it is said the club will take stock and assess their options ahead of the summer. An announcement is expected in the next 48 hours or sooner.

But it appears the club's official website has gone early.

A video appeared on the site under the title 'The most famous night of Ole's career' and linking to a video package of United's famous 1999 Champions League victory.

Under the caption, it read: "Solskjaer becomes our interim manager, 20 seasons after clinching the Treble with THAT goal at Camp Nou."

A link to the page and a screengrab were widely shared on social media before the page was taken down from the website.

Manchester United are set to appoint former Cardiff City boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their caretaker manager ahead of the Red Devlis' clash with the Bluebirds this weekend, according to reports.

Jose Mourinho sacked by Manchester United

Sky Sports

Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Manchester United.

Sky Sports News understands that his assistant Michael Carrick will be appointed temporary manager to the end of the season.

Mourinho's future has been the subject of intense scrutiny this season - and the club's worst start to a season in 28 years was confirmed with defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.

Mourinho's final game in charge was a 3-1 defeat to rivals Liverpool

The 55-year-old Portuguese insisted at Anfield that he had not lost the dressing room, as his team sat sixth in the Premier League table and 11 points off the Champions League places.

But Manchester United announced on Tuesday that "manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect".

A statement continued: "The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.

"A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager."

Manchester United sack Jose Mourinho ahead of Cardiff City clash

Tuesday 18/12/18

Manchester United have sacked manager Jose Mourinho just days before the Red Devils' clash with Cardiff City.

The Old Trafford outfit are set to appoint a caretaker boss until the end of the season.

A club statement read: "Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect.

"The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.

"A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager."

Manchester United have sacked Jose Mourinho
The Red Devils are currently 11 points adrift of the top four and trail Premier League leaders Liverpool by 19 points following their 3-1 defeat to Jurgen Klopp's side at Anfield on Sunday.

And Mourinho's sacking comes after what has been the club's worst ever start to a Premier League campaign.

The Portuguese won the Community Shield, Europa League and the League Cup in his first season at Old Trafford but has failed to land any silverware since then.

Sky Sports have reported that Michael Carrick will take interim charge of the club, with an external appointment set to be announced ahead of United's trip to South Wales this weekend.

They also claim that Carrick - along with Kieran McKenna - will take the club's training sessions until a caretaker boss is installed.

Former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is the early favourite with bookmakers to land the role while Antonio Conte, Mauricio Pochettino, Leonardo Jardim and Laurent Blanc are among those listed.

I bet Pogba's starts to play brilliantly for them now, he will want to say it was Mourinho's fault.

First thing that went through my mind! :thumbright: :laughing6:

I dislike Man Utd (mainly their fans) intently but rate Mourinho. however, I can understand why they've taken the decision.

Deliberately or not, he seems to have fallen out with the Board, the players, the media and often (it seems) himself but for me, the players themselves need to take a long, hard look at themselves and in particular the enigma that is Paul Pogba

Michael Carrick to be in charge for the next game versus the mighty Bluebirds but the club are looking for someone external to take Tham to the end of the season before appointing their next full-time manager

Next Manchester United manager odds: Former Cardiff City boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ryan Giggs linked
By Ian Mitchelmore

Manchester United fans call for Ryan Giggs to replace Jose Mourinho after Wales wonder show

Here are the front-runners to take charge of the Red Devils, according to the bookies...

Bookmakers have installed Zinedine Zidane as the favourite to become Manchester United's next manager following the sacking of Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese boss was axed on Tuesday morning, just two days after the Red Devils' 3-1 Premier League defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, a result that leaves United 19 points adrift of Jurgen Klopp's side who are at the top of the table.

In a statement, the Red Devils confirmed that they will appoint a caretaker manager for the remainder of the season with a view to installing a permanent boss in the summer ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.

And former Real Madrid manager Zidane is as short as 2/1 with some bookmakers to become the club's next boss.

The Frenchman left the Spanish giants in the summer having won three Champions Leagues, one La Liga title, two Super Cups, a Spanish Super Cup and two Club World Cups during his two-year tenure at the Bernabeu.

Paddy Power have listed Zidane as the 5/2 favourite for the role, with former United defender Laurent Blanc being the 4/1 second favourite.

Ex-Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is the third favourite at 9/2, while Wales boss Ryan Giggs is priced at 7/1 for the Old Trafford vacancy along with former Cardiff City boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

According to respected football journalist Mark Ogden, who writes for ESPN, Solskjaer was mentioned behind the scenes at Old Trafford as a possible short-term replacement for Mourinho earlier this season despite his nightmare spell at the Bluebirds.

Giggs signed a contract with the FAW until the end of the 2022 World Cup and is set to take charge of Wales in a qualifying campaign for the first time in March as the national side begin their bid to reach Euro 2020 by facing Slovakia at Cardiff City Stadium.

They will also host Trinidad & Tobago in a friendly fixture at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground four days earlier.

As for Solskjaer, he returned to Norwegian outfit Molde following his sacking by Cardiff in 2014. He has previously been a coach in the youth set-up at United.

Michael Carrick, Arsene Wenger, Leonardo Jardim, Nicky Butt and current Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino are among those listed for the role.

The Red Devils are expected to appoint a caretaker boss ahead of their Premier League clash with Cardiff City in South Wales on Saturday.

I don't think it necessarily helps us because some of the players who scuppered the manager might feel unleashed.
On the other hand , if they're doing what they feel like doing as individuals it might not be such a bad thing.
I'm not sure how some of the rest of them who've been loyal might feel now that Pogba is officially in charge.

You obviously can’t read.

It says Carrick won’t be caretaker and it will be someone from outside the club.

This will work one of two ways, if the players like the stand in manager and want him to get the post permanently they will bust a gut for him. If they don’t fancy him we can turn them over, keep believing :D

Not sure stand in guy will have that much effect but will players play with the freedom and talent that josè suppressed if they do so we could be in trouble. :old:
