I HAVE HEARD HARTSON

Wed Mar 31, 2010 9:45 pm

Is nearly Bankrupt, not because of his illness and I was really please he came through that, also I have met him a few on occasions and he has been a gentleman and had good banter with him during the sam Hammam times.

Its due to his gambling addict, another one who puts £10-£15,000 on a bet, these footballers will never learn.

Bloody Hell :o

Played with John at Afan Lido and he now lives just up the road from me cant believe footballers would risk everything they got for gambling and drink/drugs.

People nowa days think a million pound is a lot of money(It is if your are careful with it) But a million can go sooo easy.

Million pound can go in months if you are not careful

Chops had better be very careful and turn his ways around qucikly

gambling is such a huge problem. why does someone who earns thousands a week need to gamble?
i suppose it a case of the more you have, the more you want.

About 7 years ago he was worth about £3 million, then he had his divorce, but at the same time he has a gambling addiction.

he's got a kid too, now half his week wages could go into a account for his boy, after a few weeks/months years or whatever his son could have the best start in life, so much more important things to think about

i earn nothing compared to him, yet some of my wages go into a account, so when my boys older, he'll be able to pay for all his driving lessons, buy a car and maybe even put a deposit on a house

Sad to hear but so many footballers waste their money because of a gambling addiction.

I met Hartson in Aberystwyth last year, he was doing some coaching for the Welsh U21 team, was a gentleman and had some good banter about Cardiff/Swansea.

As for Chopra he better start scoring soon, I have a bet with my mate that he would score 20+ goals this season.

He is a pundit on the TV and radio quite a lot these days, maybe he does need the cash, what a shame if it's true....

it annoys me, footballers some footballers take money for granted, no wonder they demand higher wages.

i play poker once a week,
i bet on football every saturday and midweek.
horses when i get a good tip as i know a few owners.
and enjoy an occasional trip to the casino with mates

but this is all done on a budget relevant to what i earn and only a few quid here and there.
i do it for enjoyement, and win or lose, the amount i gamble doesnt ruin my day!

I don't think that footballers gamble JUST for the chance of winning money. I like a punt every now and then and admittedly, you do get a rush from gambling. However, if you take it too far, getting out of the habit is so f*cking hard. :ayatollah:

the big gamblers will only ever tell you 'the bets they won'' never ever what they have lost

Re: I HAVE HEARD HARTSON

Thu Apr 01, 2010 9:22 am

Baz, that's so true. I remember a guy I knew who once said 'f*cking hell, I just won £1,000 on the football pools'. He failed to say that he'd wasted about £100,000 over the whole year places ludicrous bets every day.

I love a gamble now and again but keep it disciplined. £3 a week on the football pools and poker now and then. It's easy to see how it sucks people in though, especially when they have lots of money.

Re: I HAVE HEARD HARTSON

Thats a great shame as I always liked Hartson as he tried his hardest when playing for Wales.

Gambling can be pretty tragic, I can remember when I was a young blokes playing 3 card brag in the local, several times I saw blokes loose all their wages on a Thursday night so would have nothing untill the following thursday except what they could borrow from their mates.

One of the few addictions I don't have, I stick £100 in a betting account at the beginning of the season which is my gambling money so if it goes it goes. Doing quite well at the moment through a few lucky bets and still have Whittingham at 14/1 to be top scorer. The £25 e/w on City promotion is not lost yet either but most of that was "free" money from the account anyway.

My mate does blood testing at premier league games etc. He was at a match not too
long ago and was chatting to Rio Ferdinand and John Hartson and asked Ferdinand
about mentioning Cardiff in his book. Ferdinand concurred that it was a horrible
day. Hartson laughed and said 'Try playing at Ninian Park when your name is John Hartson'
... referring to that West Brom game in midweek. Apparently ALL the West Brom players
were stunned by the shit he got. What an atmosphere that was though eh.

jack or not, i wish the feller well in his fight against the curse of our age, the big C. :salute: :salute:

Re: I HAVE HEARD HARTSON

I dont blame the players but the wages they get, no player is worth 100,000 (i know he was not on that much) a week, i dont care how good he is. You could feed Swansea for that amount.

Re: I HAVE HEARD HARTSON

Thu Apr 01, 2010 4:48 pm

I suppose from now on we know why the players moan about their 'financial commitments' when the wages are paid late

My brother in law, (some of you may know him if you are from the area) who recently hanged himself was only 37, lived in Trowbridge. left 4 amazing young boys behind. Gambled away thousands, lost his wife, and his business (self employed plumber, employing 2 other people) which he spent MANY years building, it was a very succesful and very financially stable business bringing in a vast income! but after his gambling, he drove both his family life and his business into the ground - obviously causing massive depression, realising what he had done had convinced him to end his own life. It was an extremely difficult time for our family, and made me understand to accept what we have in life, and not to go chasing dreams with the gamble of your own life and others in the process. I have never gambled much in life and after recent events never intend to.

I beg anyone who's struggling to get out of gambling, to seek help from gamblers annonymous at http://www.gamblersanonymous.org.uk/

There's always a way out if you feel gambling is affecting your life. Seek the help you need, there are others in the same position as you that can help you overcome your addiction (or even your illness in some cases).

Although, i must stress - i'm not having a go at others having a little fun bet on the football or a little punt on the national, etc etc.... Just gamble sensibly, and before you do, think about the important people in your life, and how it will effect them if you become addicted.

Merlin.
