Nah, only messing... partially. I'll choose one front runner, one mediocre runner and then one outsider. Maybe also one with the coolest jockey top on. I generally pick them based on their names. 'Comply or Die' has to be one of the best names for a horse.

I haven't ruled out going for the likes of Joe Lively (66-1), Dream Alliance (33-1), My Will (33-1), Snowy Morning (14-1) and The Package (14-1)! Love that name for a horse. The Package!
