QPR make offer for Cardiff defender Caulker

24/06/2014

By David McIntyre

QPR have made an offer for Cardiff City’s much sought-after defender Steven Caulker.

Rangers are one of several clubs keen on the 22-year-old England international, who is expected to leave Cardiff following their relegation last season. He has a release clause in his contract.

He has been tipped to join one of the top Premier League clubs, with Liverpool and Everton reported to be leading the race to sign him.

The R’s have nevertheless registered their interest, with manager Harry Redknapp looking to bring in at least one centre-back this summer.

Craig Bryson is also wanted by QPR

Redknapp appears to have clinched the signing of former England and Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand, 35, with a deal having been agreed in principle.

And the Rangers boss knows Caulker well, as he played under Redknapp at Tottenham.

Caulker represented Great Britain in the 2012 Olympics and scored on his England debut against Sweden later that year.

Spurs opted to sell the player the following summer and Cardiff, then newly promoted to the top flight, paid £8m to sign him.

He made 39 appearances for the Welsh club last season, scoring five goals.

Redknapp is also hoping to land Derby midfielder Craig Bryson, while a number of strikers are currently being considered as possible signings.

if we get £8m for him, i'll be happy... decent player, but way over rated as he's English! at fault for a lot of our goals this year, but other players are blamed! he got good pace, but likes to back off a lot!

He is still very young and learning his trade. I think he will become a very good player and will certainly benefit playing alongside Ferdinand if QPR sign both players.

I'd take less up front (slightly) and a 20/30% sell on clause?

I really think Caulker will be a future star. He is only 22 and had a lot pressure on him last season. Get 8 mill now and next sale clause of 15 % or so. Could turnout to be really good business :thumbright:

CARDIFF CITY, HARRY REDKNAPP, QUEENS PARK RANGERS F.C., STEVEN CAULKER

Queens Park Rangers have made an offer to sign Cardiff City defender Steven Caulker, according to West London Sport.

According to the paper, Redknapp has hit a release clause in Caulker’s contract at the South Wales club.

Cardiff defender Steven Caulker is a target for QPR

QPR are one of a host of top flight sides keen on the defender, who impressed during last season, despite the Bluebirds relegation back down to the Championship.

The former Tottenham Hotspur defender, aged 22 has been capped at full international level, scoring on his debut in a friendly against Sweden in the November of 2012.

From his defensive position, Caulker scored nine goals in 39 appearances for Cardiff last term, and looks set to move on in the coming weeks or so.

QPR won promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs last season, and will be hoping to add Caulker to their defence, having already agreed a deal to sign Rio Ferdinand, who has been released by Manchester United.

Caulker and Ferdinand would be a excellent partnership in my opinion.

I think he should go to a bigger club like Liverpool or Arsenal, with better players around him he will improve quickly and become a top player IMO, no offence .....,

A good footballer for a centre back, good pace, great athlete, but a poor defender imo. Decision making, positioning and anticipation lets Caulker down badly. He looked fine with a leader like Ledley King alongside him to organise him, but when he had to become the leader himself, he showed he was not up to it. However, he's still only 22 and will learn from this experience to become a better defender in the future.

I would think he'd be looking at a bigger club than a yo-yo club like QPR.
