Cardiff make move for Southampton defender Jose Fonte.
Welsh club return with second off for defender as Saints brace themselves to lose another player.
Ronald Koeman is facing the prospect of another departure at Southampton after Cardiff City tabled an improved £3.25 million bid for Jose Fonte.
Cardiff’s second offer for Fonte has been rejected but the defender’s future is still uncertain after he turned down a new two-year contract.
Fonte has been targeted by Cardiff manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the departure of club captain Steven Caulker to Queens Park Rangers.
Cardiff are expected to return with another offer and Koeman fears he could lose two centre-halves only three weeks before the start of the Premier League season.
Dejan Lovren is widely expected to join Liverpool and Fonte’s exit will add to the exodus, following the sales of Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert already this summer.

I'm confused, with Lovren leaving to go to Liverpool and Fonte coming off the back of a great season, why on earth would Southampton want to sell this lad? And why would he want to drop down a division. I will be amazed (and very impressed) if we pull this off.

Because he is in the last year of his contract and could walk away for nothing. He dropped down a division when he joined Southampton (Div 1 club) from Crystal Palace (Champ' club). Also, we are a club that is frightened to match/better player's salaries.

Throw 5 million on the table, take it or leave it.

Ughhhh lol why would we just go straight to overpaying or pay exactly what they ask for (that seemed to work well in the past)...
Would rather we squeeze out a small deal vs overpay by any amount. Ole makes smart and shrewd deals - look at his track record in Molde and how he's done business so far. He's not the kinda guy who will toss in a high bid for the sake of overpaying and getting his guy. He'll try to squeeze as much value out of the deal.
Still plenty of time as well to get this done.

If the figures being quoted are correct then why not go back now and offer a straight up front £3.5m. With no deals involving paying so much per month/year as seems to happen a lot. It could well sway Southampton and help both clubs move on with their pre season.

we can't be paying £5m for a centre back in the championship for crying out loud.
he'll be on premier league wages here too, surely we can get better value elsewhere?
