Would of loved him, but can't blame him for wanting Prem football. Hopefully we can do better, come on Ole :ole: :bluescarf: :ayatollah:

Cardiff City target Jose Fonte signs new three-year contract with Southampton, where he is made captain for new season
Friday Aug 08, 2014

By Simon Gaskell

The Bluebirds had been chasing Fonte and are believed to have seen a £3.25m bid knocked back at the end of last month.

Cardiff City's search for a central defender will go on after target Jose Fonte committed his future to Southampton.

The Bluebirds are thought to have made at least two bids for the Portugese defender as it was rumoured he could follow the likes of Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren out of St Mary's this summer.

But, despite upping their offer to £3.25m at the end of last month, they were unsuccessful in luring Fonte amid reports the Saints valued him closer to £5m.

Now Fonte has signed a new three-year deal with the club and been made captain for the forthcoming Premier League campaign by manager Ronald Koeman.

On signing the deal, Fonte said: "I’m very happy to sign this contract. This is where I feel at home.”

Earlier on Friday Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted he was hopeful of bringing in at least one centre-half before September 2 - when the transfer window closes - after a bad ankle injury to Ben Turner which he sustained in pre-season against Yeovil.

He told TalkSPORT: "Pre-season's gone really well apart from we lost Ben Turner with a bad ankle injury two weeks ago. He'll be out for another six to eight weeks they reckon so that was a big blow to us.

"Big Ben was going to be an important player for us so at the back we're struggling a little bit. We've also got Cala suspended but I can get 11 players on the pitch.

"When big Ben's got that long injury, I'm trying. It's still a couple of weeks left in the window."

It is thought the Bluebirds are trying to bring in Bordeaux's Lamine Sane to plug the defensive gap in their ranks.

But much like Southampton have with Fonte, the French side are also believed to be trying to tie him to a new deal and offer him the captaincy to keep him out of Cardiff's clutches.

Bluebirds sources admit they are not close to a deal, with Bordeaux's renewed determination to keep their man meaning Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have to look elsewhere.

Sane, 27, who played 36 matches for Bordeaux in the French League last season, has previously been tracked by a number of Premier League clubs including West Ham and Southampton.

Glad we've missed out. 35k a week in the championship is way too much. We should be signing promising youngsters on lower wages or developing our academy to ensure we get the best young players in South Wales and the west.

Gareth,I agree a lot of money and that's why I moan about Kenwyne Jones on £37,500 a week

He better score 20 plus goals as I won't be happy

Annis, I agree totally about jones high salary but you can't have it both ways, only a few days ago you stated that you would be sad if we sold Mutch. If we hadn't it is most likely he would have jumped ship at the end of the season and we would have lost £6m

Roy,
Mutch was on about £15,000 a week and yes I was sad that we sold him,but Roy I did agree in the end it was a good fee with only one year left :thumbright: :ayatollah:

I really believe jones could do well this season, might even start tonight if we go for a 5 man midfield. Am I right in thinking we have got around £120k of the wage bill with medel, Bellamy, caulker, Campbell and mutch leaving.

Probably just used us as a bargaining chip to broker a better deal at Southampton.
