Glenn Roeder the man behind Cardiff City hunt for Leyton Orient boss Russell Slade ...and could become director of football himself

Tues Sep 23, 2014

By Terry Phillips

Former Newcastle and West Ham boss the football confidante who suggested Slade's name to Vincent Tan

Glenn Roeder is keen for a role at Cardiff City

Former England coach Glenn Roeder is the man behind Cardiff City’s shock move for Russell Slade, we can reveal today.

And Roeder, who used to be Paul Gascoigne’s ‘minder’ up at Newcastle, could come in next to Slade himself as Vincent Tan’s director of football.

Roeder, 58, was the football confidante who recommended Slade to the Bluebirds’ billionaire owner Tan after attending the last three Cardiff matches.

He was on the official Cardiff club table at Derby’s Pride Park on Saturday, having also previously been guest of honour while watching the Bluebirds play Norwich and Middlesbrough at home.

Leyton Orient manager Slade is hot favourite to be appointed as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s successor and an impeccable source close to Roeder confirmed that he had made the recommendation.

“Glenn believes Russell would do a good job for Cardiff,” said our source.

“He would also be interested in becoming Cardiff’s director of football if it were offered, but he does not want a return to front-line management.”

Roeder, himself with strong Orient links after two spells as a player with the London club, knows Slade well.

He believes the man he has recommended is the right fit to work with Tan as the Bluebirds seek an instant return to the Premier League.

Roeder used to work as one of Glenn Hoddle’s coaches with England, but has been a manager in his own right with Norwich, Newcastle, West Ham, Watford and Gillingham.

It is five years since Roeder was in club management, having left his post as Norwich boss in 2009.

Although he doesn’t wish to return to a manager’s hot-seat, he is keen to work as a director of football and would jump at the opportunity of a link-up with Slade, if it were offered by Tan.

Roeder started his playing career with Orient and also starred as a defender with Queens Park Rangers, Notts County, Newcastle, Watford and Gillingham.

He became player-manager at Gillingham more than 20 years ago before taking charge at Watford (1993-1996), West Ham (2001-2003), Newcastle (2006-2007) and Norwich (2007-09).

Slade is the red-hot favourite to land the Cardiff job, the Bluebirds having made three approaches to Orient for Tan’s first choice for the post.

Yes he has been keeping Tan up to date.

Tan wanted DJ, but DJ wants to be manager, not Director of Football.

Got a shit judgement of managers if he's the one who wants Slade

If these appointments come off it does not give me a great deal of confidence for the future and this could be the start of the slippery slope for Cardiff City.

If the club want instant promotion or face financial difficulties this is a huge gamble. You cannot beat experience. :old:

Slade I don't want but can accept.

Roeder I really don't want at the club. Comes across as a slimy character to me.

Can Cardiff/Tan do no wrong to you? It's been said we NEED promotion or else we are in financial difficulty. So why do you think it's good to be fkin around with a DoF and going for lower league managers that have no experience above League 1?

How do you know pulus or anyone other than slade could do it ? Slade could be the man manager we've needed for a while now ,to condemn him before he's taken over is madness ,you should support the manager who ever it is

Well when they say we need promotion I'd expect an experienced championship/premiership manager to come in. If we appoint Slade and we are mid table by Christmas, what do you think the reactions going to be?

should stop and think if tan actually wants instant promotion because of financial things, why hasnt he got pulis? more to this than you or anyone else knows about! it would be simple to just appoint him so why hasnt he? :old:

Yes I would employ Pullis if it was my money, if he goes to any length to try and win that has to be a good thing surely???

If you want a return employ a proven Manager....

There's a reason for that Tan. He's bunk
