' FOOTBALL IS THE NO.1 SPORT IN WALES '

On Friday evening, Wales continued their brilliant Euro 2016 campaign with a magnificent 3-1 win over current ranked World number two team Belguim.

It was announced this morning that over 1.2million people in Wales tuned into to witness the historic match when this nation of just 3million marched on to the semi finals and booking a date with destiny against Portugal.

The television audience on Friday was bigger than any other sporting event for a Welsh team to be televised and watched in the Principality.

Bigger than any of the Wales Rugby team's matches which has included World Cup semi-finals.

This Welsh football team has captured the imagination of the nation more than any other Welsh team in any sport and on Wesnesday evening it is fully expected that the figure will be higher than 1.2million.

I have always believed that Football is the number 1 sport in Wales and to give you more facts Carl, did you know that there are more players registered playing parks and local league football than any other sport in Wales, incl Rugby :ayatollah:

I would expect Wednesdays audience to beat the biggest sporting tv viewing figures for the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2012 Olympics.

Just shows what would happen if Cardiff City ever had a top Premiership team.

Rugby cannot be compared to football in Wales no more. Also where as our fans have gone to France drank loads and behaved, that won't be the case come rugby international days.

Football always has been the only sport in Wales in my eyes. Lets hope it continues - we've already achieved the same stage as the rugby team have ever made in a global competition and we play against proper countries not some islands with a population of 15 and a witch doctor...

I agree, it has always been the no.1 sport here except in the eyes of BBC Wales, S.Wales Echo & Wales on Sunday. How many times do you hear the youngsters talking about how the Dragons or the Ospreys performed compared to how Arsenal or Chelsea or Man U or even Cardiff performed over the weekend.

They won't get the same buzz as watching us play Barnsley as they did seeing Wales impress in Euros.

it depends what you mean by 'the number one sport in wales'. fan support of the national football team is incredibly fickle, and nowhere near the commitment of the rugby fans. come rain or shine the rugby team, unlike the footballl team can count on terrific support.

if you mean the most popular sport played, again that is completely different.

but these things are subject to short term fluctuations. go back 5 years when we were ranked 127 in the world and the rugby team reached the semi finals, and the thread would have had a different set of responses from many.

in any case is it worth obsessing over this question as many do? just enjoy both or either.
