Full Time: Shrewsbury 0-4 Cardiff City :bluebird: :ayatollah: :bluebird:

Scorers

Gounongbe
Pilkighton
James
Zohore

193 Cardiff fans attended

Paul Trollope will be thrilled with that performance.

The Bluebirds dominated the opening 45, when they adopted the same three at the back and two wing-backs formation employed by Wales at the Euros.

New man Frederic Gounongbe will also be pleased to open his Cardiff City account on his debut.

All in all, that’s a solid afternoon’s work.

Second-half

Cardiff made 11 changes

New-look Cardiff side 4-2-3-1: Moore; Warton, James, Blaise, Tutonda; Adeyemi, Dikgacoi; Noone, Kennedy, Harris; Zohore.

Today's attendance is 930 (with 193 from Cardiff) -

Half Time: Shrewsbury 0-2 Cardiff City :bluebird: :bluebird:

That’s the break.

Paul Trollope will be quietly very happy with that first half, you would think.

His new system - that has been employed by Wales - has stumped the Shrews, with Fabio and especially Declan John causing all sorts of problems down the flanks.

They have linking up well with Pilkington in particular, whose goal was of top quality.

Gounongbe will also be delighted to be on the scoreboard in his first Cardiff City outing.

At the back Ajayi, Manga and Connolly have had very little to do against lower league opposition.

Shrewsbury set to play on-trial Smith against Cardiff City after defender features in Wolves draw

By Damion Roberts

Kane Smith is set to play a second game for Shrewsbury Town.

The Hitchin Town right-back featured in the Shrews’ 2-2 draw against Championship side Wolves behind closed doors on Saturday, and now the League One outfit want to have a second look at the defender in match action with Smith expected to feature against the Bluebirds this weekend.

Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town are among the clubs that have been keeping tabs on the 20-year-old over the past few months, while the defender has also had a trial at West Brom.

MICKY MELLON

Friday 15th July 2016

Gaffer's thoughts ahead of the weekends game with Cardiff

Town welcome Championship side Cardiff City to the Greenhous Meadow on Saturday for the first home game of pre-season.

Cardiff finished in 8th place in the Championship last season so it should be a decent test to the new look Shrewsbury Town side.

The game kicks off at 3pm and it will be played over four periods of 30 minutes.

Town opened their pre-season games last Saturday with a 2-2 draw against Wolves in a behind closed doors match at their training ground.

Micky Mellon is looking forward to the game and the test against a decent side.

“It will be a very good test for us against a very good Championship side”, said Micky.

“They have asked for four half hour periods which will be something new for us as well.

“We don’t have a squad the size of Cardiff’s so it will be a test for us but no one will be able to come out of it and say they haven’t got any game time.

“It will be a good challenge which will step-up the fitness levels, step-up us as a group and we will be able to try plenty of things.

“It’s the first game on the pitch and it is always exciting to get back out there and start playing.”

The game will give Town fans a first chance to see the new Town summer signings in action.

“The fans can see the new players and hopefully they will like what they see”, added Micky.

“We’ll go out there and try to play the way we want to and take another step towards that first game of the season.”

There have been a number of trailists training with Town since the start of pre-season training. The gaffer is planning to give some of them a run out in the game to see how they shape up in match action.

“We will get them involved as well and have a good look a them as it’s important that we have a look at them in an environment that we would want them to play in if we brought them in.”, said Micky.

“Let’s see what they are like and give them the opportunity to impress us.

“After that we can have a better idea of what we might need to do in the near future.”

Cardiff head to New Meadow to take on Shrewsbury Town on Saturday afternoon in their second friendly fixture of pre-season.

Paul Trollope will take a full squad of first team players to New Meadow to take on League One outfit Shrewsbury Town. The teams will go head-to-head in four 30-minute periods in a bid to give everyone the chance to play without regular substitutions disrupting the flow of the contest.

The travelling Bluebirds supporters will unexpectedly see every fit first team player in action throughout the course of the afternoon. Paul Trollope will be looking to watch all his players in action before they travel to their pre-season training camp in Germany next week.

Cardiff made the trip to Shrewsbury last pre-season and the teams couldn’t be separated on that occasion, drawing 2-2. Joe Mason and Anthony Pilkington scored for the Bluebirds, and Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro and James Collins scored for the home team.

The two teams would go on to meet during the season when they met at the Cardiff City Stadium during January, in a FA Cup Third Round tie. Micky Mellon’s men pulled off an upset with Andy Mangan scoring the winning goal to initiate a cup run for The Town.

Shrewsbury endured a poor season in League One last season, following promotion from League Two the season before. Micky Mellon’s men finished just one spot above the relegation zone in 20th, surviving the drop by four points.

The disappointing league campaign meant their FA Cup run which saw them beat Cardiff and Sheffield Wednesday, was the highlight of their season. The Shrews were eventually knocked out by Manchester United at Meadow Lane in the Fifth Round.

Back to normal!

Don’t get caught out today.

Originally, this game was planned to consist of four 30-minute periods, with the suggestion that two teams of 11 would play for an hour each.

But the plans have now changed and we’re playing a normal 90-minute match.
