Wigan Athletic have targeted Bournemouth midfielder Eunan O'Kane as a replacement for Cardiff City-bound Emyr Huws

Cardiff City are closing in on Wales midfielder Emyr Huws, HITC Sport understands from sources close to the club

Tuesday 9th August 2016

Huws is well down the pecking order at Wigan and he spent last season on loan at Huddersfield Town.

Huws came through the youth ranks at Swansea City and is a Wales international teammate of Jazz Richards.

The 20 year old made 30 appearances and scored five goals for Huddersfield last season before returning to Wigan at the end of the campaign.

Huws did not feature in Wigan's opening Championship defeat to Bristol City and Latics boss Gary Caldwell is understood to be willing to let him move on before the close of the transfer window.

New Cardiff boss Paul Trollope is on a recruitment drive of Welsh players after being told by Bluebirds owner Vincent Tan to get more young Welsh talent into the team.

Cardiff have already brought in Huws' Wales international teammate Jazz Richards this summer and they are now looking to bring the central midfielder to the Cardiff City Squad.

Huws came through the youth ranks at Swansea City before joining Manchester City in 2009, but he failed to break into City's star-studded side and joined Wigan in the summer of 2014.

If the plan is to sell Gunners and replace him with Emyr Huws on lower wages whilst pocketing a transfer fee of £2m then that is very shrewd and the type of thinking which is well over due at CCFC.

Bringing in Welsh talent developing it and sell at a profit is a brilliant mid term plan. Good on CCFC for a change.

But he can't get in the Wigan team

The problem is they are different players gunner is a defensive man, huws is a attack minded player, it's all good and well saying well out players and buy young attack minded but if it all goes pear shaped then we are left in a mess

I think it has something to do with Huws wanting to play at a higher level when Wigan went down. He went to Huddersfield for the season.

And Gunnarsson was outstanding in the Euros. Welsh or not, Aron Gunnarsson is a better player and would be a loss if CCFC replace him with Emyr Huws!

Even if AG is a better player he is not much use if he can't get into the first XI.

Splitting hairs a bit there. We have defensive minded players in Ralls and O'Keefe so it would-not be a case of selling ourselves short.

personally i think huws is as gd as gunnar and hes younger and gets the odd goal, i love gunnar but everyone has a price and i think that huws is more than good enough to fill guinnarsons loss

Gunnarsson had a good euros and so did lots of other average players like Hal Robson kanu. Gunnar is a great battler and leader but lacks composure on the ball or any final product.

Decent bit of business here

Although I rate Gunnar highly, he will want first team football which may not be possible here.

Desperate for a striker though imo

final product being the main reason id sell, plus when was the last time he chipped in with a goal at least under malkay he used to chip in

Huws is class. Full of potential, but hard to see where he'd fit into the present system.

Whenever I've seen him play for wales he's looked a class act, also seen videos showing he's capable of worldies, heir to whitts? :D

why? between him ralls, whitts, okeefe, adeyemi for the three cm roles i think ralls okeefe and whitts would be a good midfield 3

Adeyemi is another one I'd like to see go especially if it means more funds for a striker.

yeah but the fact hes been given a squad number maybe hes shown something in preseason to make trollope give him a chance

We need a striker FFS!

Maybe this youngster may be worth a punt if it's a free transfer and on low wages but otherwise why do we need him?

To those who are saying that this lad who can't get into Wigan's team is better than a player who was captain of his country and reached a Euro quarter final - what planet are you living on?

We don't need him - Welsh or not. Our first Welsh signing hasn't started off too well has he either on or off the field.

Huws looks like he could be another Tom Lawrence.

Maybe, but i think we're top heavy there already. Whitts, Ralls, gunnar, okeefe, adeyemi and possibly Huws going for two spots? We need two gone if Huws does come imo.

He's a superb talent and a superior player to gannar, okeefe and adeyemi, I'd love to see him here but while we have so many central holding midfielders at the club it doesn't make much sense.. Maybe there are plans to sell two of the above?

I think we'll all have to suck it up as to me this is Trollope putting his stamp on the squad.

What a great signing he'd be! Goal-scoring midfielder, with a lot of potential development!

This would be our best signing in a long while if we pull it off. :notworthy: :ayatollah:

I don't think it's that simple. I think it's because after Wigan went down from the Championship, he jumped ship to Huddersfield in order to stay in the Championship. Wigan fans are still pretty unhappy with him even now!

Yeah and look at all the talented players we've ostracised and then sold

Jesus wept, just how much of a say do you think he had with the loan move. How old is he,20?Don't believe everything you read on the internet.Wigan probably had their reasons but you can bet it wasn't him telling the club.

On what evidence are you basing this?

Gunnar and O'Keefe have played in the Premier League - Huws has been loaned out from a club who were in League 1 last season and certainly didn't set the world alight at a club that struggled in the Championship last season.

He could turn out to be a very good player but he does seem a little injury prone and a few decent performances in largely unimportant games for his country hardly suggest he's superior to O'Keefe and Gunnarsson.
