UPDATED Friday 12th August 2016

Middlesbrough have signed Brazilian defender Fabio da Silva from Cardiff City on a two-year contract for £2m, the Premier League side confirmed on Friday.

The left back, whose twin brother Rafael plays for Ligue 1 club Olympique Lyonnais, made 23 appearances for Cardiff in the Championship, the second tier of English football, last season and has won two caps for Brazil.

"We'd like to take this opportunity to thank Fabio for his contribution during his two and a half years at the club," said a statement on the Cardiff City website.

The 26-year-old joined Manchester United from Fluminense in 2008 but struggled to establish himself at Old Trafford, spending a year on loan at Queens Park Rangers before departing for Cardiff in January 2014.

' CARDIFF CITY STAR SET TO LEAVE IN NEXT 48HRS '

Paul Trollope just said about Fabio:

Fabio has been well documented but nothing’s changed, it’s an ongoing process. We don’t want to lose any of the ones that are in the group. But like most clubs players have their prices, perhaps buy out clauses. There’s a few in the club we’re willing to listen to offers for which is well documented and that won’t change between now and end of season.

Fabio on the brink of exit?

Reports from sources close to Boro expect a deal to be wrapped up in the next 48 hours.

I can only go on what I’ve heard but I’m pretty sure this deal will go through at some stage or another.

Saddens me but I can't blame Fabio for taking a chance to go back to the Premier League and (if it goes through) I will monitor his progress and wish him all the best  :ayatollah:

Chris, I'm really gutted and I just hope City spend the money straight back in to strengthening our squad.

Wez, you know as well as I did, for the last year they've been pushing Fabio out and I 100% don't blame him for going to the Premier League, City wanted the money and it just proves he was more than good enough for us :thumbright: :thumbright:

Lets see where the £2million is spent?

We need a striker ASAP.

We can dream, Annis! Money in = money out don't appear to go hand in hand anymore at the CCS!

I would have loved to see him as a wing-back in our new system, but ultimately £2million and a big wage off the books is pretty good for a player that has never consistently excelled at the club.

For all his enthusiasm and endeavour, he was rash and reckless; and although he had flashes of quality, never really made a big impact in many of our games.

I'm sure some players will come in but I'd imagine it'll be out of contract / freebies or loans. Also they will be on a lot less than Fabio I'd imagine. It is good business but only if Fabios position is adequately covered and players coming in are good quality and hungry to do well here. I'd settle for that.

I agree with you. Fabio play always flattered to deceive, & like most of OGS's signings, I'm not unhappy to see him leave. He did have a go though, & I believe he was approachable to our fans off the pitch too, so I wish him the best of luck.

The 2m will probably go on covering the wages of Alf and Macheda. Might free up enough for a loan though. We still need cut backs so I wouldn't assume it's going on transfers. The Club have said cutbacks need to be made.
Hopefully move gunnar on as well and then we might see some activity.

Good luck Fabio. Always gave 100%. Will be missed but a good opportunity to get amongst the big boys again. All the best and thanks for your efforts. Slade may have had his doubts but I think most of the fans appreciated him.

If you want success this season and I'm assuming you do,you need to do a lot more than just "blood the youngsters" any spare money available must be used in investing in the team, particularly in areas where we are weak

Always sad to lose a good good committed player but money talks and his wages seems to be a factor.I think we all would have liked to have seen Fabio play in the new formation but it's no to be.
Good luck to him.

I wish him good luck and sad to see him go . Hopefully we will use some of the money for a decent striker as we need one more than we need Fabio if we have any chance of a play off place

Very disappointed with this, but all the best to Fabio. Always gave his best. The goal he scored on that freezing cold night up there must have impressed them!

£2m is peanuts in today's transfer market, should have got at least double in my opinion. Hope he does well in the Prem.

You can forget about instant success, were in the middle of a huge rebuilding process we need to be patient.

Fabio macheda dikichoi and le fondre all really high earners we dont need at the club.

Now fabio has gone i hope we can get the other three out by the end of august too. Fabio was our second choice full back behind someone who was also deemed not very good on here. Granted he would have been more suited to this wingback role but im not sad to see him go.

Re: ' CARDIFF CITY STAR SOLD FOR £2MILLION '

I remember having doubts over Fabio when he first came here. I can't remember who we were playing when I changed my mind but I remember the incident. Fabio was playing left-back and was having a blinder when he did a perfect crunch tackle on the oppositions right winger.

I sit near the front of the Ninian Stand and I remember as one we all stood up and shouted 'well done Fabio'. The look on his face was one of disbelief because prior to that the crowd used to get on his back.

It seemed to inspire him and from then on he put in a number of impressive performances, I remember one cross for KJ who scored coming from near the half-way line!

How he was kept out of the side by Scott Malone is baffling but he will leave with my best wishes. :ayatollah:
