Cardiff City's Worst start to a season for more than a decade

Vincent Tan has been Cardiff City's owner for seven years.

I was surprised to read on Sky Sports News last night that yesterday's defeat at Norwich means Cardiff City have made their worst start to a league campaign in eleven years, but I've checked the stats this morning and the claim is correct.

The points totals after six league games during the last twelve seasons are as follows (managers in brackets):

2005/06 - 5 points (Dave Jones)
2006/07 - 13 points (Dave Jones)
2007/08 - 7 points (Dave Jones)
2008/09 - 10 points (Dave Jones)
2009/10 - 10 points (Dave Jones)
2010/11 - 13 points (Dave Jones)
2011/12 - 11 points (Malky Mackay)
2012/13 - 13 points (Malky Mackay)
2013/14 - 8 points (Malky Mackay)
2014/15 - 8 points (Ole Gunnar Solskjaer)
2015/16 - 12 points (Russell Slade)
2016/17 - 5 points (Paul Trollope)

It's a statement of the obvious, but a total of just five points from the first six games is none too clever after what appeared on paper to be a fairly routine set of fixtures by Championship standards (City have so far played only one side who were ranked in the top ten of the division's pre-season favourites - yesterday's opponents Norwich).

Nothing can be worse than watching a Malky side who bored the pants off me

Interesting - Not sure of the relevance of adding Tan being in charge of the seven years out of the eleven because we all know that ?

Surprised me re Slade - personally I would have kept him until all cost cutting was completed then start afresh with a young hungry manager that knows his budget - unfortunate for Trollope as he is trying to implement a new style of playing whilst cost cutting is still taking place !

Sometimes we have to be careful what we wish for !!

If you look back at the last time we made such a poor start at this level it did follow a summer where the club offloaded a number of players for "Financial" reasons. That summer saw the club offload Gabbidon, Thorne, Collins, Langley, Vidmar, McAnuff, Bullock, Robinson, Croft and of course just before the end of the previous season Kavanagh. During the summer we signed only 1 player for a fee, Darren Purse, but got Loovens, Koumas and Ricketts on loam with Scimecca and Thompson to follow in January.

We had a small squad that season with just over 20 players appearing in Championship matches, it looks like a similar number of players will appear this season with the squad having been cut to the bone by the summer of austerity. In my opinion our squad is too small to compete and we will struggle as the season goes on. Back in 2005-06 out of the last 7 games we only took 2 of the 21 points available and I think it will be the same this season.

We have quality in our squad and I don't think we will get dragged into a relegation battle but neither will we trouble the top 6. The squad is way short of numbers to do that.
