An Ipswich Town expert says why the Welshman has been a revelation in East Anglia and Ipswich expect to sign him this June.

Emyr Huws' failure to make an impact at Cardiff City remains a mystery, especially to those who have observed his remarkable progress at Ipswich Town.

The Welshman is ineligible to face his parent club this weekend — yet may have missed the game regardless, due to the tight hamstring that ruled him out of the Wales squad to face Ireland.

Yet his record since joining on a deadline day loan to Portman Road has been illuminating. Huws' talent has never been in question, but he's not showing consistency on a basis that will encourage Wales fans and possibly leave Bluebirds followers scratching their heads.

Stuart Watson , Chief Football Writer for East Anglian Daily Times and Ipswich Star, about Huws' form, his popularity with the Ipswich fans and why it is very likely Mick McCarthy will swoop for the midfielder at the end of the season.

Aside from a Man Of The Match display on Ipswich debut, when Huws set up fellow countryman Tom Lawrence for a goal, the 23-year-old has shown a potency from midfield that the Tractor Boys were previously in need of.

It's a goal threat Cardiff have barely had from midfield, with neither Joe Ralls nor Aron Gunnarsson regular goal scorers.

"Ipswich have been crying out for a goal threat from central midfield and he has scored twice in six games since signing," says Stuart.

"He scored a late winner against Aston Villa and also against Brentford.

"He's brought creativity and an energy going box-to-box that has been lacking at Ipswich for a long time."

Taking a pay cut

Huws' decision to take a cut in wages to join Ipswich in the hunt for regular first team football has been well documented.

But it was a decision, Stuart says, that won him instant admirers among the Tractor Boys' faithful. And a scintillating debut against Reading helped his cause.

But while adoration from the fans and the excitement of actually playing spurred on the Welshman at first, he now needs to show composure and consistency.

Emyr Huws was sensational on Ipswich Town debut
"I think the fact he took a pay cut to come to Ipswich brought the fans on his side straight away," adds Stuart.

"They have really taken to him because of that pay cut, and also because he's hit the ground running.

"Huws and (on loan Leeds United midfielder) Toumani Diagouraga have rejuvenated a stale midfield.

"But I think adrenaline got him through those first few games and he's not quite been at it since, with a tight hamstring.

What next?

According to Stuart — after talking with Mick McCarthy — it seems talks about a permanent move for Huws are almost inevitable in the summer.

It would make sense, with Huws seemingly not figuring in Warnock's promotion plans . Only an incredible u-turn and more goal heroics from Huws would surely cause the Cardiff boss to change his mind.

With Huws just happy to play regular football, his Cardiff days might be numbered before they really got going.

"Ipswich will definitely look to sign him permanently in the summer," says Stuart.

"It's a bit of a double-edged sword because Ipswich aren't spending big money these days, it's mainly loans and free transfers with £700,000 about the limit to their spending power — and if Huws continues to perform, Cardiff might want him back.

"Mick McCarthy doesn't think that's the case though, the two parties will definitely have a chat in the summer.

"Huws is exactly what Ipswich need; a willing runner from midfield instead of the two destroyers McCarthy has often played in there. Huws has been a breath of fresh air really."

Mick McCarthy is a personal friend of Neil Warnock, so I can see that 'conversation' having already having taken place between the two managerial stalwarts ;)

Emyr Huws is a slightly baffling one at the CCS (there are/were others, including Le Fondre) as he has obvious talent yet failed to produce it on any consistent level

I may be wrong but I believe that Neil Warnock will not be rushing to recall any of his current loanees come this summer; preferring instead to off-load where possible and bring in 'his own' type of players to carry out specific tasks on the pitch in the style that he wants :ayatollah:

If Mick can get the best out of him, surely Warnock can?

Did he ever start a league game for us?

Yeah and got taken off at half time the once. I think he started that cup game against Fulham where in all fairness the whole squad was dreadful. That aside maybe one or two sub appearances at most.

The guys not had a chance, it took Zohore a fair few games to hit form its something that comes with time and patience.

If Neil finds himself saying that about Lawrence then maybe he'll be saying the same thing about Huws if he lets him go!

Were prob getting rid of okeefe, Whitts is in the twilight of his career... He could save us a wedge if he stays and performs.

I don't see him fitting into Warnocks style of play just like Whitts doesn't so the better he does the more we can ask for him come the summer.

Think you've hit nail on head sven! NW knows about all our players out on loan and suspect with exception of lawrence they will not suit his plans of what is required to get promotion next season! You cannot question NW on who he thinks will be able to execute his ideas effectively or who he needs to come in?. :thumbup:

Its great he is going well though, I bet if Ipswich offered to take him on a free in Jan City would have took it straight away, at this rate we will be expecting a fee, hopefully between 500k to 1m

Agree, but Lawrence was 'one that got away' after a season with Russell Slade rather than a Warnock error and I'm sure he would be keen to get him back, if that was possible :thumbup: :ayatollah:

Huws was a victim of the pecking order in that there were too many central midfielders in the queue in front of him. The last time this subject came around I remember engaging with someone who steadfastly said that it was still his fault (EH) as had failed to take his chances when they came along.

In other words the Preston away game and the Fulham FA Cup game.

That is a hard one to argue against because if he had performed he would have given his manager(s) something to think about.

It appears that there was an opening for him at Ipswich (to get into the team) and he was hungry enough to grab his chance. So my conclusion is he was a victim of circumstance at Cardiff but has found an escape route which for his own benefit he should take.

as i said, 6 million for warnock, going for promotion is shit, all these fringe players , player sales etc etc, is going to top . warnocks spending power up, over the summer, players contracts, players leaving, is going to turn 6 million in to 10 million plus i hope :clap: :)

He's probably too expensive now after this season. We may have pinched him for cheaper if we'd made a bid last summer.

Agree even if he was with city a good season would make him a good bet to stay at Leicester or sign for newly promoted premier club or big spenders in champ! Either way we couldn't afford him next season. :thumbup:

I have said in a few other threads, that we should take Huws back at the end of the loan spell.
He is still young and has potential;
He has talent as shown by the fact he has been to big clubs;
He has had several injuries which have meant that he has had no "run of games" which most players need to show form and consistency;
He has good attitude as shown by lower wage to get regular football at Ipswich.
(Most of the above points also applied the Kenneth Zahore. Fans and even NW wrote him off too soon as well).
KZ saved NW millions on a forward, ITS QUITE POSSIBLE THAT EH COULD DO THE SAME IN MIDFIELD. We should at least see how EH is pre season before writing him off!! If he doesn't impress after having a fair chance then get rid. But PW is now a bit long in the tooth and our other midfielders are fairly similar -more destructive than creative.
Huws has had very little opportunity here, we need to see whether he can fulfil potential - not continue to write young players off too early and sell them for peanuts!
