The Blues win away at Cardiff.

Birmingham City FC

Tuesday 21st March 2017

The Blues after a league campaign that saw them win only one of their opening 18 PDL fixtures, are finally starting to turn the corner by thrashing Cardiff in Cardiff.

Odin Bailey’s late first-half penalty separated the sides at the break after a closely-matched opening 45 minutes in which the hosts created a fair number of chances.

But some tactical changes implemented by Blues at the interval paid dividends as the visitors dominated the remainder of the game and added three more goals to complete an emphatic 4-0 victory.

Bailey doubled his personal tally on 57 minutes – a free-kick bent over the Cardiff wall into the bottom corner.

Tai-Reece Chisholm, who had won the 39th minute penalty after being brought down inside the area, got the goal that his impressive individual performance deserved on the hour.

Jordan Clarke’s cross into the box was pounced upon by midfielder Chisholm to register only his second goal of the season – his first since August.

Young central defender Joe Redmond (pictured), who captained the Blues side, capped off a great day as he opened his goal account for the Under-18s six minutes from time, heading home from a corner.

Steve Spooner, Blues’ Lead Professional Development Coach, was delighted with the way his team had taken on board what was asked of them at the break to run out convincing winners.

“We had a few shots off target in the first-half but Cardiff tested our goalkeeper Adam Siviter a few times – he made a couple of really good saves to keep us in it,” said Spooner.

“We went in at half-time and we changed our game plan. The players then carried it out to perfection and reaped the rewards of that.

“We scored three goals in the second-half and arguably it could have been more.

“At half-time you would have never thought it was going to be a 4-0 game because Cardiff played some really good football and made it hard for us.

“But we came out in the second-half and carried out the new tactical plan and executed it very well, which was really pleasing.”

The game saw a competitive debut at Under-18 level for schoolboy Ben Forest, who came on at half-time in place of left-back Matty Timms and acquitted himself very well to help the visitors record a second successive clean sheet.

Birmingham Under-18s have come on strong during the closing weeks of the season. After a league campaign that saw them win only one of their opening 18 PDL fixturesA, Spooner’s charges have chalked up six victories in their last eight outings to climb away from the foot of the table.

Have to say that results are not impressive but for me not the be all and end all,l think back to the best youth team we've ever produced in the early seventies ,they never got beat until the youth cup final second leg against Arsenal yet apart from Phil Dwyer no one went on to have a long career at the club so l wouldn't put to much store in results at this level

It's all about learning the game at this level, Scotland got to the youth World Cup Final but haven't qualified for a major championship in decades.

personally think the youth set up is abysmal and needs to be scrapped.

Looking at those results, it shows our GK and defence are appalling and our strike force is non existent.

Whoever is in charge needs a wake up call as getting smashed 6-0 and 4-0 is not good at all.

Not the best

Away record is horrific

And standards haven't really changed sine Bellamy took in fact it looks worse

But we have let a couple of dvp regulars out on loan

Thing which isn't stated in this article is due to the mass clear out of u23s over the past few months a large number of the current u18s have stepped up to play u23s, and the same with the u18s as the team over those results has included a mass of u16s a few u15s and even a u14, so the result may not be the best right now but think of the valuable experience these players are currently getting playing up 2-3 years at a academy standard which hopefully we will see the benefit off at a 1st team level in years to come... :bluebird:

Is that good though ? as confidance will drop and I've just looked we are getting a lot of losses at all levels now.
Why are the only club doing this in all the Leagues?

We should follow successful ones :thumbright:

I can't see how the u14 u15 are going to grow when Alot of them are at different academies now.

They have done a massive intake at under 10 level and can't fault them for that.

But the fact is we aren't producing home grown talent

That starts at the teenage levels

The DVP should now be looking competitive to move up to the first.

If stats are anything to go by the system has failed.

If an u18 is showing potential then he should be tried and tested at dvp

We are doing the same as Toshack all those years ago.

Blood youngsters early, move them up early, they don't lose confidence they know they are playing against more developed players. The U23 should be able to provide first team cover for a GK,FB,CD,CM,CF and winger. If nor then let them leave.

If you haven't broken into the first team picture by 21 are you are the right level, the kids we let go are playing well below championship level. Our problem has been we had far too many first team squad member to motivate those U23 kids to push themselves, that is being slowly sorted, but it will take a season or two of hammerings to rectify.

The sad thing is Joe Ralls and Kadeem Harris were bought by is as youngsters so have come through half our system, but the last player was Declan John (not sure Harris can be counted just yet)
