Kent-born Masood, who was shot dead by police, had not been the subject of any current police investigations, but had a range of previous convictions.
The 52-year-old was believed to have been living in the West Midlands.
The so-called Islamic State group has said it was behind the attack, in which PC Keith Palmer, Aysha Frade and US tourist Kurt Cochran were killed.
Three women and five men were arrested in London and Birmingham on suspicion of preparation of terrorist acts following Wednesday's attack.
A woman aged 39 was arrested in east London
A 21-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man were arrested in Birmingham
A 26-year-old woman and three men aged 28, 27 and 26 were arrested at another address in Birmingham
A man aged 58 was arrested at an address in Birmingham
The Met Police says detectives are continuing to search a number of addresses, including one in Carmarthenshire, three in Birmingham and one in east London. Addresses in Brighton and south-east London have also been searched.
'We will defeat them'
Home Secretary Amber Rudd told those gathered for a candlelit vigil in London's Trafalgar Square on Thursday evening that terrorists "will not win".
"We are all connected and today we showed that by coming together, by going to work, by getting about our normal business, because the terrorists will not defeat us. We will defeat them," she said.
Masood drove into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before crashing his car into railings and then running into the grounds of Parliament, armed with a knife.
He stabbed PC Palmer before being shot dead.

Eight arrests have been made in raids in London, Birmingham and elsewhere following an attack in Westminster that left four dead, police have said.
Hundreds of detectives worked through the night, carrying out searches at six addresses, Acting Deputy Commissioner Mark Rowley said.
The dead are PC Keith Palmer, Aysha Frade who worked at a London college, a man in his 50s and the attacker.
Seven of the injured are still in hospital in a critical condition.
A further 29 had been treated in hospital, Mr Rowley added.
In the attack on Wednesday, a man drove a car along a pavement on Westminster Bridge knocking down pedestrians, creating panic and leaving dozens injured.
He then ran towards Parliament where he stabbed PC Palmer who was unarmed. Armed police then shot dead the attacker in the grounds.
Mrs Frade worked at a London sixth form college just a few hundred metres from Westminster Bridge.
Principal at DLD College, Rachel Borland, said she was "highly regarded and loved by our students and by her colleagues".

Parliament in lockdown: Police open fire in Westminster and shoot knife-wielding man amid reports of explosion and pedestrians mowed down on bridge
Armed Police have opened fire and shot an intruder inside the grounds of the Houses of Parliament amid reports a car drove into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge.
Several shots were fired at around 2.35pm moments after a loud bang was heard near the grounds of Parliament.
Three bodies were visible on the floor outside Parliament and the Palace was placed on an immediate lock down.
Others were seen lying in the road on Westminster Bridge, where reports suggest around six people were knocked down by a car.
Prime Minister Theresa May is said to have been bundled into a car by a plain-clothes police officer and driven quickly from the scene.
Emergency teams were seen carrying out CPR inside the palace grounds in New Palace Yard, the main thoroughfare in and out of Parliament

The House of Commons was suspended by Deputy Speaker Lindsay Hoyle. MPs have been ordered to wait inside the Commons chamber.

An eye witness said that a car was seen to mow down five people on Westminster Bridge.
Police are then believed to have shot a man who tried to enter the Parliamentary Estate.
The Air Ambulance landed in to Parliament Square.
Twelve police cars and vans were outside the Palace in the moments after the incident.

The dramatic incident comes weeks after it was revealed that UK security services have foiled 13 potential attacks in less than four years, while counter-terrorism units are running more than 500 investigations at any time.
The official threat level for international terrorism has stood at severe, meaning an attack is 'highly likely', for more than two years.
Liberal Democrat transport spokeswoman Baroness Randerson said countries seem to have been 'singled out based on religious beliefs'.
'Of course safety is paramount at all times and we all need to remain vigilant but this ban needs to be explained in detail,' she said.
PC Keith Palmer stopped the attacker in his tracks. Aysha Frade would be deeply missed by all, the principal at the college said

Attacker shot by police, says reporter
Daily Mail journalist Quentin Letts says he saw a "thick clad man dressed in black" shot by the police just below Big Ben.
Speaking to the BBC News Channel he said: "We heard what sounded like a car crash. I looked out and saw lots of members of public running down the pavement screaming and shouting.
"A thick set man in black clothes came through the gates where people drive cars into New Palace Yard.
"This man had somthing in his hand, it looked like a stick.
"He was challenged by two police in yellow jackets. One of these policemen fell down and we could see the man in black moving his arm in a way that was either stabbing or striking the yellow jacketed police man.
"One policeman ran to get help, which was very, very quick to come.
"As this attacker ran towards the entrance used by MPs, two plain clothes guys with guns shouted at him - uttered what sounded like a warning - and shot two or three times, and he fell.”
Telegraph chief political correspondent Christopher Hope told BBC Radio 5 live he heard a loud "bang" on Westminster Bridge before hearing "screaming, shouting" and witnessing "about 100 people running" towards Westminster Abbey.
He said this was followed by several shots, and saw two individuals "lying in the road" outside Westminster Hall. They were being treated by medics.

He told MPs the "alleged assailant was shot by armed police" following a "serious" incident.
Staff inside Parliament were told to stay inside their offices.
The BBC's Laura Kuenssberg said police told her someone had been shot and MPs said they heard "three or four gunshots".
Tom Peck, political editor for the Independent, tweeted: "There was a loud bang. Screams. Commotion. Then the sound of gunshots. Armed police everywhere."
Prime Minister Theresa May was seen being ushered into a silver Jaguar car as what sounded like gunfire rang out at Parliament during the incident.
A Downing Street source confirmed that Prime Minister Theresa May was "OK".
Scotland Yard said it was called to a firearms incident on Westminster Bridge amid reports of several people injured.
Transport for London said Westminster underground station has been shut at the police's request.
Mr Lidington said: "It seems that a police officer has been stabbed, that the alleged assailant was shot by armed police.
"An air ambulance is currently attending the scene to remove the casualties.
"There are also reports of further violent incidents in the vicinity of the Palace of Westminster but I hope colleagues on all sides will appreciate that it'd be wrong of me to go into further details until we have confirmation from the police and from the House security authorities about what is going on."

It's a horrendous time, I've used Glasgow Airport, walked around Paris, been on a Tunisian Beach and sat on the Madrid Underground, all have been attacked by Islamist crackpots. Another Islamist from Cardiff was tried this week, its frightening what our children will inherit.
