Fifa has opened proceedings against Wales full-back Neil Taylor after his leg-breaking challenge on Republic of Ireland's Seamus Coleman.

The Everton defender, 28, was taken off on a stretcher after the tackle which saw Taylor sent off during last Friday's World Cup qualifier in Dublin.

Coleman was taken to hospital and required surgery on a double break.

Taylor, 28, will be suspended for the qualifier in Serbia in June, but could have his one-game ban extended by Fifa.

Wales captain Ashley Williams recently revealed that Taylor wanted to see Coleman in hospital, and sent him a text message from the Aviva Stadium.

"Neil was gutted. He was sitting on the floor virtually in tears," he told the Everton website.

"Even people who don't know Seamus like I do were gutted.

"He asked me to check if it would be OK to go to see Seamus in hospital. He got his number off me and sent him a text straight away.

"When I found out it was a broken leg it made me feel sick inside because it's someone who I like so much and is one of my mates."

Taylor began his professional career at Wrexham before moving to Swansea in 2010, helping the club win promotion to the Premier League in 2011.

The left-back moved to Championship club Aston Villa in January.

It was a clumsy, late tackle, but it really didn't look like there was anything malicious in it and he's never seemed like that kind of player, even as he walked off he looked devastated.

Everyone is hanging the lad out to dry and I just hope the FAW support him.

Have to agree with that. Could open a can of worms that FIFA may come to regret :ayatollah:

Remember when he did his ankle playing for Jacks - he's not a dirty player just wrong place wrong time and media making more of it than it has too

We've seen far worse challenges in the past go without FIFA poking their mucky noses in. Seem to have it in for us at the moment. They don't like little Wales getting in the way of the BIG boys in world football.

Fifa are acting on refs report ! Guess it's his interpretation of the tackle which will decide action? :old:

I thought if the referee has seen it then acted there is nothing FIFA can do :?

Ref can only send him off but he can say in his report what he thought of tackle and the intent of the player making it! that's what fifa are looking at and wether it warrants longer ban than 1 match?

Typical!

He made a massive mistake, not a malicious attack. It's not his style. He's no Vinnie Jones.

There seems to be a lot of tackles these days which are either two footed or so late they could result in serious injury. Often players miss their targets or the target gets out of the way in time.

However, eventually someone was going to get badly injured and unfortunately Coleman was that player. As it happened in a FIFA competition they would have a duty to investigate if something more was mentioned in the referees match report.

Also they may be thinking it is time to punish such tackles harshly. The thinking being that players must take more responsibility for rash or poorly timed challenges which could cause serious injuries to other players.

Isnt it a straight 3 match ban Chief. Or Isis it completely different for internationals. But TBF he should be dropped anyway as he has been a liability.

No only a one match ban! Like said ref obviously added his own observations? And agree he as not been at his best recently and contributed little in past couple games. :old:

FIFA investigating anything is like having Robert Mugabe investigating election rigging. Shit-Gibbons.
