Champs-Élysées‬‬ attack: 1 police officer killed, another injured in Paris shooting

One policeman has been shot dead and two others wounded in central Paris, French police say, with their suspected attacker killed by security forces.



Second attacker came direct on a train from Brussels


The Champs Elysees, where the shooting occurred, was sealed off. A lone gunman opened fire before being killed as he fled the scene, police say.

It happened as presidential candidates made their last pitches in a TV appearance before Sunday's election.
An anti-terrorist investigation has been launched.

"On the face of it, the officers were deliberately targeted," interior ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said.

Two police officers have died after a gunman opened fire at the Champs Elysees in Paris.

Paris police spokeswoman Johanna Primevert said that the attacker targeted police guarding the area near the Franklin Roosevelt subway station at the centre of the avenue.

One policeman was killed and another was wounded in the shooting, police said. The second officer died shortly afterwards

The gunman has also been killed. Police said a search was underway at his home east of Paris.

Local police advised people to avoid the area after shots were fired at around 9pm local time.

At least one attacker, who is thought to have been known to security sources, has been shot dead, the Interior Ministry said.

A spokesman told French TV officers were deliberately targeted, but conflicting local news reports suggest the shooting could have been a failed armed robbery.

Unconfirmed reports suggest other attackers were involved and shots have been heard at a second location nearby.

Paris Prosecutor's anti-terror office has opened an inquiry.

Yvan Assioma of the police union Alliance said: “The exact circumstances are still unclear but I can confirm the tragic death of one of our colleagues. Our thoughts are very much with the family.

“One or several attackers have been shot dead by the police. Some officers were hit but the bullets were stopped by their bulletproof vests, but two were hit.
