Founded: 9 December 1892; 123 years ago
Ground: St James' Park
Capacity: 52,354
Owner: Mike Ashley

Newcastle United Football Club is an English professional association football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne. Following the club's most recent relegation from the top-flight during the 2015–16 season, Newcastle returned to the Football League's 2nd tier, the Championship, for the 2016–17 campaign. Newcastle United was founded in 1892 by the merger of Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End, and has played at its current home ground, St James' Park, ever since. The ground was developed into an all-seater stadium in the mid-1990s and now has a capacity of 52,354.The club has been a member of the Premier League for all but two years of the competition's history, and has never dropped below English football's second tier since joining the Football League in 1893. The club has been owned by Mike Ashley since 2007, succeeding long term chairman and owner Sir John Hall.

They have won four League Championship titles, six FA Cups and a Charity Shield, as well as the 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup and the 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Newcastle United has the ninth highest total of trophies won by an English club. The club's most successful period was between 1904 and 1910, when they won an FA Cup and three of their First Division titles. The club is the seventeenth richest club in the world in terms of annual revenue, generating €169.3m in 2015. Historically, Newcastle's highest placing was in 1999 when they were the fifth richest in the world, and second in England only behind Manchester United. The club were highly successful in the Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s, but have been mostly struggling since the 2006–07 season, and were relegated in 2009 and 2016.

They have a fierce local rivalry with Sunderland, and the two clubs have engaged in the Tyne–Wear derby since 1898. Furthermore, are also rivals with Middlesbrough and engage in the Tyne-Tees derby. The club's traditional kit colours are black and white striped shirts, black shorts and black socks. Their traditional crest takes elements of the city coat of arms, which features two grey seahorses.

Newcastle United vs. Cardiff City preview

Geordie Blogg

Thursday 27th April 2017

In their first match since clinching promotion, Newcastle United will travel to face Cardiff City.

Thankfully Toon Army, the match tomorrow against Cardiff City does not impact if Newcastle United get promoted. It feels very nice to say that. If Newcastle United can win, there will be one big thing still up for grabs: the league title.

Newcastle would need to win both of their remaining matches, with Brighton not winning either of their final two. The match with Cardiff is their first time out since the promotion, and we are likely to see some younger players mixed in to the usual lineup.

The previous Sky Bet Championship match up of these two clubs this season was won by Newcastle United, 2-1 at St. James’ Park, in November.

Nothing is at stake for Cardiff City. They sit right at the middle of the table, 13th place, with 59 points. Kenneth Zohore leads the Bluebirds with 11 league goals this season. Another notable player on their roster is Aron Gunnarsson, who captained Iceland to an exciting run in Euro 2016.

The match kicks off at 7:45pm GMT, from Cardiff City Stadium. This is the final road fixture of the year for Newcastle United

' UPDATE ON NEWCASTLE FANS COMING TO CARDIFF '

Newcastle originally asked if they could have up to 10,000 tickets.

Cardiff City bent over backwards for the Geordie Club and even moved Cardiff season ticket holders to accommodate them.

Cardiff City then were able to arrange for Newcastle to have 6,000 tickets and sent them to Newcastle.

Newcastle put them on sale to Season ticket holders and Members but could only sell about 3,500, so they then put them on general sale which they are still currently are.

Cardiff City officials have now confirmed that the visitors are expected to have between 4,000 and 4,500 supporters at the match against the Bluebirds tomorrow night.

Is the Newcastle match a barometer?

NEIL WARNOCK:

"I don’t think I need this game to be a barometer. Since I’ve been here I don’t think there’s been one game we couldn’t have won."

'I look at differences in other teams, we had a period of sloppy goals, we had a period of mistakes at the back, and a period of not being able to score. Those three things, if we can improve on those, which I think we can, there are a lot more points we could have had this season, let alone next. "

"It’s about tidying up our own house, putting our own house in order. I will imagine we’ll be mid-table bookies wise next year because there will be some big teams, big clubs, and it will be difficult to get into that top area but that’s what we’ve got to strive for – first of all to get into that top 10, then the top six. That’s why I’m here, to have an opportunity like that."

Not a bad side. Hopefully with the defensive Halford and semi-defensive Gunnarsson midfield it will allow Whitts to be at his creative best.

Maybe a last home run out/glorified testimonial for the great one?
