' NEWCASTLE UNITED HIT BADLY WITH INJURIES '

Manager Rafa Benitez has admitted Newcastle United could be without up to six players for the clash later this evening against Cardiff City.

Dwight Gayle is already sidelined with injury and Jesus Gamez is struggling with an issue of his own, so speaking to the Official Site in his pre game conference - whilst avoiding all talk of off pitch developments at the club this week -

Benitez explained that Vurnon Anita, Grant Hanley, Jamaal Lascelles and Matt Ritchie will need a rest having 'little problems' of their own.

It's subsequently come to pass that Ritchie's 'little problem' was the Football Association charge that's seen him banned for the final two games of the season, you would presume.

'In terms of injuries, we have some players who were playing with little problems - Lascelles, Ritchie, Hanley, Anita. Also, Gamez has a problem and Gayle is still not available, so with these players, we will try to fix their problems now because we have more time. They will not be in the squad. If everything is fine, they will be ready as soon as possible - not for this game, maybe for the next game.'

Benitez is however still looking for the win as the Championship title remains an option if we take all three points and Brighton slip up.

'We will try to win away, because it will be a record in the history of the club. To equal the record is really good, but if you can break the record, even better, so we will try to do it.'

With automatic promotion now guaranteed for Newcastle in any event the main aim of the season has been achieved but the title is in their hands as they sit four points clear of us in the table, so all we can do is put the pressure on.

'If we can win our games and Brighton make a mistake, we can be champions, and we will try to do it. When you have achieved something that you were trying to achieve for so long, sometimes you can just relax, but we still have two games - and we will try to do our best.'

He added.

'What we have achieved has been really, really important for anyone here. As I have said before, in the last five or six years, only one team has been promoted straight after relegation, so to do that - with two games to play - means it is a great achievement. These players deserve credit for that. To have all the city behind the team has also been really good, and I am really pleased with that.'
