Newport County have appointed Mike Flynn as their new manager.

Flynn was named as the Exiles' caretaker boss following the sacking of Graham Westley in March, with the club 11 points adrift of safety and their Football League status under serious threat.

But he guided Newport to seven wins in his 12 games at the helm, the last of which was a dramatic 2-1 success over Notts County at Rodney Parade, a result that secured the Exiles' place in the division.

And Flynn has been rewarded for his stunning efforts by being named as Westley's permanent successor.

Flynn said: "I’m delighted to have been named manager of the club. Nothing makes me prouder than to take charge of my hometown club.

"I made no secret that I wanted this job. When I took over as caretaker manager in March, I said I felt ready for the challenge and that’s still true now because I know this is a challenge.

"What we’ve achieved with this group of lads in the last few weeks has been unbelievable but I never want this club to be in that situation again.

"I’m ready to push on now and take this team forward with the help of Wayne Hatswell and Lennie Lawrence as well as the board.

"The fans have been through some really tough times this season.

"We want Rodney Parade to be like it was on the last game of the season every week and I’m hoping we’ll give them more to cheer about next season. They deserve that for sticking by us all this time."

Chairman of operations Gavin Foxall said: "Michael has made the decision to appoint him on a permanent basis an easy one for the board of dfirectors.

"From the outset as caretaker manager he has performed in an impressive manner in every area. His record and what he has achieved on the pitch in such a short period of time is phenomenal."

Remarkable job what he done and I think he deserves a crack, if they can do that turn around under him then they should be fine next season.

Don't like Newport County, but fair play, I bet even Alex Ferguson wouldnt have got them out of that mess. Flynn did a seemingly impossible job. He should be given the freedom of Newport. Think he got a great future ahead of him.

Good Luck to him - Done the the job and as he said has the respect of fans and players down there.

We should look at getting some players out on loan again next season to them .

Well done to Flynn, and what makes it even better is that he is a Newport lad himself.
