Bantams hit back at "lazy and unhelpful" claim fans are scared to buy Wembley tickets because its Millwall

CITY have angrily rejected a national newspaper claim that fans have been “scared off” from buying Wembley tickets.

The report suggested that some supporters would stay away from next Saturday’s League One play-off final because they feared the reputation of opponents Millwall.

But City today hit back and labelled the story “lazy and unhelpful”.

Chief operating officer James Mason said: “What a shame to read a ‘non story’ a week before one of the biggest day’s in the club’s history.

“As it stands we've sold in excess of 22,000 and all our supporter groups are going in numbers as they have done all season. That's over 3,000 more than the number of season ticket holders we have for next season.

“In 2013 we made two unforgettable trips to Wembley, the first visits for nearly 30 years. To go a third time in only four years may have always had an effect on sales and it's no secret we took 30,000 to the Capital One Cup final but to suggest our supporters are not going to Wembley because they are scared is just nonsense.

“Our travelling fans have travelled in big numbers all season away from home and have visited Millwall on numerous occasions in the last few seasons in the league, FA Cup and play off semi-final last year.

“This year we have sold out ten away allocations so we have proved our hard-core support is growing.

“A Wembley final attracts many other supporters that might not come on a regular basis including families and friends of season-ticket holders.

“Many of our fans will be coming down for the weekend or starting off early on Saturday morning on long expensive trips. For a family of four buying the lowest-priced tickets and travelling on an official coach the day will cost over £250 if you include food and drink.”

City safety officer David Dowse has been in close contact with the EFL, Wembley, the FA and Millwall to agree all possible precautions are in place. Dowse said: “The meetings have demonstrated that valuable lessons have been learned by the Police and Wembley which will help to ensure the game goes ahead without the major incidents that have marred previously play-off games.”

A league spokesman told the T&A: “The EFL wishes to reassure supporters that we are working collaboratively with WNSL (Wembley National Stadium Limited), the Metropolitan Police and other relevant authorities to put all the necessary plans in place to ensure the event is a welcoming and enjoyable occasion for all.

“As always, safety and security measures will be comprehensively assessed to ensure they meet the specific requirements of the fixture and we have every confidence that the final will present fans of both clubs with a fitting conclusion to the League One season.”

Today is the final day for City fans to buy online and over the phone through Ticketmaster. The club are considering whether to take up the option to sell more from the Valley Parade ticket office.

The Bantams are urging supporters to back them in numbers and anticipate noisy following as they bid to return to Championship football after a 13-year absence.

Mason added: “We restricted early sales to two per person to our loyal supporters and this was the right thing to do.

“We're happy in the knowledge that whatever tickets sales figure we end up with, our fans will be a healthy mixture of families going to enjoy their day.

“It's an occasion to enjoy and relish. It's up to the City fans now to sing longer and louder than the opposition and I know they will.”
