This is why Wembley Stadium has been lit up in the colours of Welsh clubs

Saturday 20th May 2017

Wales' top football clubs and the national side have all been honoured by the English Football Association by having their colours beamed on the famous arch of Wembley Stadium.

The club colours of Swansea City, Cardiff City, Newport County and Wrexham as well as the red and white of the Welsh national side all illuminated the grand arch that towers over London's 90,000-seater stadium while the team's crest and name was also emblazoned on giant screens outside the ground.

But what is it all about?

Well today (May 19, 2017) marks the 10th anniversary of the official opening of the new Wembley Stadium, and to celebrate, all 166 teams to have played at the venue had their colours beamed plastered on the exterior.

The FA's chief executive Martin Glenn said: "Wembley Stadium had a difficult birth but a decade on we can only be proud of what the stadium has become. It’s now Europe's leading stadium and without doubt the venue of choice for global sporting and entertainment events.

"Having already hosted so many memorable moments we are looking forward to what the next decade will bring including Adele, the semi-finals and final of Euro 2020 and hosting Tottenham Hotspur next season. It can only get bigger and better."

Wales made their one and only appearances at the new stadium in September 2011, suffering a 1-0 defeat to Fabio Capello's side, with Ashley Young netting the only goal of the match.

Swansea City have enjoyed two memorable trips to the stadium, firstly securing promotion into the Premier League with victory a 4-2 victory over Reading in 2011 before thrashing Bradford 5-0 to win the League Cup for the first time in their history in 2013.

They will be playing at the stadium for a third time next season when they take on Tottenham who are moving into the 90,000-seater venue while their new ground is being built.

Cardiff City enjoyed two trips to the stadium in the space of a month during their memorable FA Cup run in 2008, beating Barnsley 1-0 in the semi-final before suffering defeat by the same scoreline to Portsmouth in the final.

Their most recent appearance at the stadium came in 2012 as they suffered an agonising penalty shootout loss to Liverpool in the League Cup final.

Newport County's first of two appearances at the stadium came in 2012 as they beat fellow Welsh side Wrexham - who beat Grimsby in the 2013 FA Trophy final at Wembley - 2-0 to secure promotion into the Football League.

The Exiles also played at Wembley in the final of the FA Trophy competition, although they were beaten 2-0 by York City in the 2012 competition.
