Challenged on why EU referendum pledge to use money from Brexit for NHS is not in manifesto, foreign secretary says: ‘It is. It is’

Rowena Mason Sunday 21 May 2017 12.23 BST
Boris Johnson has suggested Theresa May promised to give the NHS an extra £350m a week at the launch of the Conservative party manifesto, when neither she nor the document made any such promise.

The foreign secretary was pressed on why there was no pledge from the Tories to use any proceeds from Brexit to fund the NHS, when handing over £350m a week was a flagship promise of his campaign to leave the EU.

Asked on ITV’s Peston on Sunday why the £350m was not in the manifesto, Johnson said: “It is. It is. Theresa May, she said it at the launch of the manifesto … She said we are going to take back control.”

The political editor Robert Peston cried: “Where?”, but Johnson went straight into a speech about how the election was a contest between May and Jeremy Corbyn as leaders.

At the manifesto launch, May made a promise to “take back control of [EU] structural funds and use them to strengthen our union and reduce inequalities between our communities”.

However, there was no mention of any of this money specifically going to the NHS.

Since the referendum, May and her cabinet ministers have repeatedly been challenged about why they are not honouring the pledge which was emblazoned on a bus used to transport Johnson on the campaign trail.

The former leave strategist Dominic Cummings has suggested it was instrumental in helping the leave campaign win the contest.

Vote Leave Watch, a group pressing for the pledge to be honoured, has accused Johnson of “taking the public for fools"

So the delluded righties! I hope you have faith in Boris Johnson! Good luck! :)

So Theresa May was firmly in the remain camp for the Brexit campaign but you'll happily use a slogan on the side of a bus that had buggar all to do with her or 80% of the current cabinet to question her manifesto??

Why not engage your brain before calling us deluded.

Ahh I see no response to my actual statement. You are happy to hold Theresa may accountable for a Leave campaign promise despite her firmly being in the remain camp or shall we just forget it.

What bit am I deluded on exactly?

I feel sorry for you.

The post is about Boris Johnson and how he claimed that there would be £350million for the NHS when there was no statement made by May or in the manifesto.

Maybe you should read it again :) or even better here is a Link for you.

It's a Tory manifesto, remember the Tory government at the time that backed remain.

You quoted Mays name several times.

Nothing complicated here you can feel sorry for me all you like I'm not the one trying to bash Theresa May and the Tory manifesto for something they had nothing to do with.

Can you even understand the point here or does your blind hatred of the torys stop you?

What was the Wooden Dolls pledge when taking office? Wasn't it BREXIT means BREXIT? If that's the case then asking when will the £350mpw be spent on the NHS as promised by the leave campaign is a legitimate question.

What was that about engaging your brain?

Currency has crashed by around 15% against the euro, highest inflation figures for 8 years, wages falling against retail price index and we haven't even left the Eu yet. Watch the financial jobs lost in London start to pick up pace in the coming months and then come back on here 18 months after Brexit has actually happened. Don't think you'll be making such smug statements then.

May now wants a hard Brexit, has said there will be no election, this Tory governement have lead us into unparalleled levels of political and financial uncertainty but she's strong and stable?

After today's U-turn, and another one by this incompetent government, I do not hold out much hope for the UK in the next 5 years. She, and her pals, are utterly, utterly useless.

A half decent opposition would wipe the floor with her. Still, going to vote Labour anyway, after all, their policies are much more palatable than BLUKIP.

btw i think the Tory stance on Brexit was to remain.
but of course as a labour voter youll just ignore that fact and pretend otherwise.

I'm a small business owner that works hard trying to build a business based mainly on imports from within the Eu. The specialist products I import are not available from China or other markets as the quality is just not there so I can't simply swap my supply line. Since the EU referendum vote my company has lost around £30k based on increased currency costs. So far, like many other businesses I have swallowed those costs, but next month will have to increase my prices by a minimum of 5%. Many other businesses far larger than mine are in the same position and there is no doubt that prices will continue to rise dramatically in the next 2 years, as the absorbed costs are gradually passed on to consumers.
Nothing mystic Meg about that - just basic economics.
