The best of Neil Warnock’s decisions as Cardiff City boss so far

Neil Warnock turned out to be one of the finest appointments in English football this season but what are the best and worst of his decisions as Cardiff boss?

The Bluebirds have thrived under the stewardship of experienced boss Neil Warnock and they won’t be regretting his appointment any time soon.

The Best

Reinvigorating Kenneth Zohore

This is one of the more obvious choices with Zohore being one of the biggest surprise packages this season.

The big Dane looked lost and out of his depth before a cold night at the Cardiff City Stadium against Wolves when he came to life after being given a chance to impress from the bench.

He hasn’t looked back since and his goalscoring form under Neil Warnock has raised plenty of eyebrows around the Championship.

Zohore will be one to watch in the Championship next season and Warnock’s decision to give him another chance could turn out to be one of the best in many a year.

Securing the best of the free agents

When Neil Warnock joined the club back in October, he was quickly joined by Junior Hoilett and Sol Bamba who agreed to follow the veteran boss to his next destination.

The pair were also joined by unsuccessful short-term signings Marouane Chamakh and Kieron Richardson but they certainly won’t be remembered for much longer around the blue half of South Wales.

Bamba and Hoilett on the other hand, have been tremendous signings, making a huge impact on a side who were going rapidly downhill at the time.

Sol Bamba has reinvigorated the back-line, adding leadership quality as well as outright defensive quality.

While Junior Hoilett, while not the most consistent, has added a freshness to Cardiff’s wing-play, offering pace and a preciseness along with Kadeem Harris.

Warnock will look back on the signings of the two experienced players as a pivotal moment in Cardiff’s season, and possibly next season too.

Reinstating Aron Gunnarsson as the Bluebirds’ midfield general

Gunnarsson has been a fan favourite in South Wales and that’s largely down to his no-nonsense approach to midfield play.

A natural leader of men who would probably have a place in any Championship squad, and a key component Neil Warnock’s group.

Following an excellent summer with Iceland at Euro 2016, Gunnarsson lost his way in domestic football, struggling as Cardiff plummeted down the league table.

However, it was quickly apparent that he and Warnock are a match made in footballing heaven.

The Bluebirds’ boss has a trust and belief in Gunnarsson and he has thrived, leading Cardiff to a brilliant end to the season.

Giving Kadeem Harris a new lease of life

The lively winger has stagnated in recent years after signing from Wycombe Wanderers as an up-and-coming talent in 2012.

Harris seemed destined for the exit after failing to land a first-team spot, but Neil Warnock has given him a new lease of life.

The 23-year-old has become one of the Bluebirds’ first choice wingers, making 38 appearances across the season.

There’s no doubting Warnock has got the best out of Harris during his time at the club so far and the majority of fans will be pleased when he puts pen-to-paper on a new deal.

Making Craig Noone available for transfer

It’s no secret that Crag Noone has endured a tough couple of years trying to regain form with Cardiff City.

The once electric winger has seldom maintained any sort of hot streak since relegation from the Premier League in 2014, and it’s time he moved on.

Noone has been a terrific servant to the club, and it’s perhaps that reason why some previous managers have shied away from letting him depart.

But Neil Warnock has made it clear Noone needs a new challenge next season, making a decision that’s clearly best for the player and club.
