Division one club Blackburn Rovers are confident of securing a deal for Cardiff City’s Peter Whittingham – but the midfielder does have interest from Championship clubs, one of them being Bristol City.

Rovers boss Tony Mowbray is keen to make the 32-year-old his first signing of the summer with the playmaker out of contract at the Cardiff City Stadium.

He has been offered fresh terms to stay with Neil Warnock’s side but could be tempted by linking up with Mowbray at Rovers.

Whittingham made 37 appearances for the Bluebirds last season, scoring seven goals, but found his playing time limited towards the end of the campaign, having not completed 90 minutes since mid-March.

And although he has an offer on the table in South Wales he is expected to seek a new club this summer as he weighs up his future.

Rovers are one of a number of teams interested in signing the former Aston Villa man but they face competition from at least one Championship club for his signature.

However, it is understood that Whittingham is interested in working under Mowbray at Ewood with the Rovers' boss style of play suiting him.

He is also keen to play regular football, something that would on the table at Rovers, while the challenge of potentially competing at the top end of the table, albeit in League One, appeals.

The Cardiff man does have other options but is keen to sort his future quickly meaning any potential Rovers deal could be sorted in the next few days, although he would not be able to officially move to East Lancashire until July 1 when his contract with the Bluebirds expires.

Whittingham has made more than 450 appearances for Cardiff since joining the club in 2005, scoring 98 goals, and is a firm fans favourite with City supporters.

He began his career at Villa Park and spent time on loan with Burnley and Derby County before moving to Cardiff.

Rovers are keen to strengthen in the middle of midfield having released Jason Lowe, Hope Akpan and Danny Guthrie at the end of last season while Corry Evans is currently out injured.

BLACKBURN ROVERS REMAIN CONFIDENT OF SIGNING EXPERIENCED MIDFIELDER THIS SUMMER

Football League

Monday 12th June 2017

According to the Lancashire Telegraph, Peter Whittingham is interested in a move to Blackburn Rovers this summer, with the club confident they will secure his service, despite interest from the Sky Bet Championship.

Whittingham is set to end a ten-year association with Cardiff City by leaving on a free later this summer, despite the Bluebirds offering the 32-year old a contract to remain in Wales.

The experienced midfielder is attracting interest from across the Championship, but Blackburn, who were relegated to League One last season, are confident Whittingham will move to Ewood Park later this summer.

Whittingham has made over 450 appearances for Cardiff, since arriving in Wales from Aston Villa in 2007. The midfielder has also represented the Bluebirds in the Premier League, having helped the club to promotion from the Championship during the 2012/13 campaign.

The 32-year old was part of the Cardiff side that lost the 2008 FA Cup final to Portsmouth.

However, despite making 37 appearances in the Championship last season, Whittingham began to fall out of favour with Neil Warnock at Cardiff towards the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

It is thought that the prospect of regular football, which Blackburn would offer Whittingham, will be the reason the midfielder opts to drop into League One to link up with Tony Mowbray.

Peter Whittingham could become Tony Mowbray's first signing as Blackburn boss, according to HITC Sport.

Having spent the past decade at the club, Whittingham has reportedly turned down the contract offer from Cardiff as the former Aston Villa midfielder seeks a new challenge over an extended deal with the Championship side.

During his time at Cardiff, Whittingham has played over 450 games for the Bluebirds, including a spell in the Premier League and an FA Cup final. The midfielder had also become a fans' favourite at the Cardiff City Stadium.

These reports say a 'number of clubs have expressed an interest' but Blackburn have moved quickest to secure Whittingham, 32, and this will see Mowbray add the experienced and goalscoring threat to the Rovers squad ahead of the 2017-18 season.

Blackburn please Whitts......

True legend, that won't be diminished going into another division with a club that is not classed as a rival.

Building your philosophy around his passing and control of pace has worked in the past, just get legs around him and decent centre halfs to connect to his corners....Championship here we come

Be disappointed to see Whitts go.....one of my favourite City players

Assume he is due a testimonial for 10 years service. Hope City make a better job of it than they did for Super Kev!
