Parachute payments! " £104 Million "

Club relegated from premiership will get a total of £104m over 4yrs in payments! That is a big advantage now for relegated clubs, the playing field is certainly not level now! :o

With effect from the 2016/17 season just ended , the parachute payments for relegated clubs were for a maximum period of three years. Year 1 payment was 55% of the equal share part of the broadcast payment the relegated club would have got had it stayed up, Year 2 payment 45% and Year3 20%.

For clubs relegated after just one year in the Premier only the first two parachute payments are made with Year3 being zero.

Its all relative tho. Just as the pize money/parachute payments have gone up in the PL so have the level of wages along side them, eating them up. Apparently sunderland got the same this year for finishing in last place than Leicester did the year before for winning it!

As the clubs coming down will have players with higher wages again stuck on their books and the parachute payments will just get eaten away same way ours did by not being able to move on the ever increasing high earners.

The payments will be over a maximum of three years, not four, and calculated on the percentages I set out in my initial post. The idea of the recently reduced payment period is to try and get relegated clubs to reduce their player costs down quicker rather than have a longer term financial " crutch" which might tempt them to hold on to their more expensive players for longer in an imprudent effort to get repromoted.

What is clear is that relegated clubs will be able to spend far more than their Championship rivals in the first season at least before being forced to take the harder financial decisions involving cost cutting

So relegated clubs have to throw the kitchen sink at promotion in their first season at championship or risk FFP the following year ???

What is happening is clubs now are signing players when in championship and including relegation clause in contracts so tbat if club goes up then comes back down wages are automatically reduced so leaving club less reliant on parachute payments certainly in 1st year,
