'Magic left peg!' Cardiff City players past and present pay tribute to Peter Whittingham after departure from Cardiff City

The news that Peter Whittingham has left Cardiff City after 10-and-a-half years' loyal service has rocked Bluebirds fans.

There was an outpouring of emotion from Cardiff supporters on social media as the news that Whittingham had joined Blackburn Rovers filtered through. It was a moment many expected, given Whittingham's contract situation, but was hard to swallow for some.

Whittingham was pictured with a Rovers scarf and released a heartfelt statement confirming his departure.

The sadness from fans was expected, but fellow Cardiff players — past and present — have also joined in paying tribute to the left-footed magician. Whittingham finished on 96 Bluebirds goals from 457 appearances, an achievement recognised by his peers.

Former Bluebirds full back Kevin McNaughton posted: "All the best to Whitts on his move, what a footballer, hope it goes well for him. #magicleftpeg."

Joe Bennett and Matt Connolly were among the current Bluebirds to ALSO pay tribute to the Cardiff legend — despite Bennett having only played alongside Whittingham for a single season at Cardiff City Stadium.

Bennett said: "Going to miss my mate. Made the game look so easy. What a player and servant he has been for the club."

While Connolly — who had teased Whittingham's departure by posting a picture of the Bluebirds legend with two sad emojis last week — added: "Gonna miss my roomy! Will never forget my first home game he banged a hattrick without a smile or celebration."
