How is Neil Warnock's Cardiff City XI shaping up

Neil Warnock has been true to his word.

The Cardiff City boss promised he would get his summer business done early, and after four new signings — and another on the way — the Bluebirds' squad is taking shape.

Add to that new contracts for Junior Hoilett, Kadeem Harris and Lee Peltier, with a possible new deal for centre-back Bruno Manga on the table, Cardiff will be happy with their business so far.

Their pre-season campaign begins on July 14, with the squad reconvening before that ahead of a potential promotion push next season.

Neil Etheridge, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, Callum Paterson and Lee Camp have arrived at Cardiff City Stadium, with a forward set to join next week according to Bluebirds' chiefs.

Sam Gallagher and Danny Ward have both been linked with Cardiff, though it remains unclear who the mystery forward will be.

Here is one possible option, set out in a 4-3-3 formation...

GK: Neil Etheridge

Fellow new gloveman Lee Camp may start as the man in possession of the No.1 jersey, but expect Etheridge to remain firmly on his coat-tails. The former Walsall keeper is a 53-cap international with the Philippines and, at 27, is a "good age" for a keeper, according to Warnock.

While Etheridge might have to sit on the bench for the first few games of the campaign, he will get a chance in pre-season and cup games to stamp his authority and stake a claim. He's five years younger than Camp and could become the Bluebirds' long-term No.1.

RB: Callum Paterson

There's plenty of competition for places at right-back next season with Lee Peltier, Matt Connolly and Jazz Richards all accomplished in the position, but Paterson will provide a physical and direct option if chosen in the back four.

Peltier may well start as first choice in August with Paterson still recovering from injury.

But the Scot comes highly rated and his goal-scoring record at Hearts suggests he should have enough to forge his way into Warnock's plans and become a dangerous playing, despite the injury set-back.

CBs: Bruno Manga, Sol Bamba

Much still depends on the future of Manga and if a new deal can be thrashed out in the coming days. But if Warnock can tie the Gabon international to a new deal, it could be the start of brilliant new centre-back partnership at Cardiff City Stadium.

Sean Morrison has been the subject of a £3million bid from Sheffield Wednesday, but Warnock is keen to keep his captain and may opt for a back three on occasion next term. The prospect of a Bamba-Manga partnership, however, is a tantalising one for Bluebirds' fans.

LWB: Joe Bennett

Another position which will see fierce competition for places next season, but Bennett's form at the back end of last year was fantastic and he should be the first choice left back despite good competition from Richards.

Bennett's ability to bomb down the channel and offer an option on the overlap make him Warnock's favoured choice.

CMs: Joe Ralls, Aron Gunnarsson, Emyr Huws

Ralls and Gunnarsson have their first team spots virtually nailed down. Both are favourites of Warnock for their industry and fearlessness in the tackle. But the Bluebirds' midfield needs sparkle in the absence of Whittingham. Whether Cardiff will add a high-calibre midfielder remains to be seen.

They do, of course, have a creative central midfielder available to them and he wouldn't cost a penny, save for his current wages. Emyr Huws has a contract at Cardiff City Stadium until 2019 and impressed on loan at Ipswich Town last season. Bluebirds fans wait excitedly to see if Warnock can re-integrate the Welshman back into his squad. It's surely worth a punt.

Wingers: Kadeem Harris, Junior Hoilett

Warnock is likely to favour a 4-3-3 formation, which turns into a 4-5-1 when Cardiff are defending. And while he's added Nathaniel Mendez-Laingfrom Rochdale, it seems unlikely that anyone will usurp Harris or Hoilett on the flanks.

Both are quick and lethal on their day, and the manager is keen for both to add goals to their game.

That will be the challenge he lays down at the start of this campaign.

CF: Kenneth Zohore

Who else? The Bluebirds anticipate signing a striker in the coming weeks but whoever joins must either play alongside the Danish juggernaut or surpass him. Zohore will surely start as Cardiff's No.9 with Warnock challenging him to his 25 goals or more next term.

And that's better because....................

Last seasons third choice striker who either the penny dropped or hit a purple patch with two wide forwards who don't score or assist. A midfield devoid of goals or assists, why we rave over Huws just because he is Welsh always mystify's me.

Bamba & Sol is mouth watering i agree but a full back we wont see until christmas.

Unless its 442 with a decent goalscorer up with Kenny where are the goals coming from. 433

P S- Dominic - check how many of last season goals were from set plays ;)
