Finsbury Park suspect 'blows kiss' from back of police van

A dad of four four living in Cardiff has been identified as the Finsbury Park terror attack suspect who allegedly ploughed a van into a group of Muslim worshippers.

The suspect arrested after a van drove into worshippers near the mosque in north London has been named locally as Darren Osborne.

The Mirror reported that the 47-year-old grew up in Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset, but now lives with his partner and four children in Cardiff, Wales.

The suspect has been arrested "for the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorism, including murder and attempted murder".

The Met Police has confirmed that searches are being carried out at "a residential address in the Cardiff area".

Police are searching a house in Glyn Rhosyn in Cardiff's Pentwyn.

Glyn Rhosyn is a quiet, leafy street in Cardiff’s Pentwyn. There are about a dozen small houses looking out on to trees. One PCSO is guarding the front of the property and there are three police vans on the street.

The van used in the attack is owned by Pontyclun Van Hire, 12 miles west of Cardiff.

People in Pentwyn, Cardiff, were shocked at the alleged connection to the city.

One Muslim neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said: “He just seemed normal.

“Yesterday I heard him singing in the kitchen with his kids.”

Another said Osborne had two dogs, a mongrel and a Yorkshire terrier.

He said: "I couldn't believe it when I saw it on the television."

A third said he was "a big bloke, about 6ft 4ins tall, but was "not a social man" and didn't like talking to people.

Pentwyn councillor Joe Carter said he was "shocked and saddened" to learn of the link to Pentwyn.

He said: "The community I represent is close-knit with lots of different faiths living peacefully. We need to come together, stay calm, pray for the individuals still in hospital and see what the investigation reveals. We all deserve answers and justice."

The Finsbury Park terror suspect looks battered and bruised after the incident

Dave Ashford, 52, who has lived on the estate for more than 20 years, said: “Someone called me and said it was him and I said ‘It can’t be’. Then I saw the picture on the news and said ‘S***, it’s him’.”

One ex-schoolmate, who attended Broadoak Mathematics and Computing College with Osborne, said he had known him for more than three decades.

Referring to a picture of the suspect at the scene of the attack, he told Mirror Online: "I went to school with him, I've known him for 35 years, it's 100% him.

"He lives in Wales, he has four kids and a missus."

Another man who claimed to know Osborne said he was "disturbed" by the news of the attack, adding that he "couldn't believe" it.

Witnesses claimed Obsorne, who was detained by members of the public at the scene, shouted: "I'm going to kill Muslims."

According to public records, Osborne was born in Singapore in 1969. His mum and other relatives still live in Weston-super-Mare.

This afternoon, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said the terror attack was "quite clearly an attack on Muslims".

Ms Dick said: "This was quite clearly an attack on Muslims who looked like they were probably Muslims and they were coming from a prayer meeting.

"We treat this as a terrorist attack."

She added: "Sadly we have suffered a number of attacks and very sad events over the last few weeks."

Ms Dick spoke as Security Minister Ben Wallace confirmed the man was not known to the security services.

He told BBC Radio 4's World At One: "What I can say on this case is this individual, so far as we know at the moment, was not known to us, but we are aware of a rise in the far right."

Osborne, who is believed to have acted alone, allegedly struck as the area was busy with worshippers attending Ramadan night prayers.

Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the incident as "every bit as sickening" as the recent atrocities in London and Manchester.

After meeting faith leaders at Finsbury Park Mosque this afternoon, she said: "The terrible terrorist attack which took place last night was an evil borne out of hatred and it has devastated a community.

"I am pleased to have been here today to see the strength of that community coming together, all faiths united in one desire to see extremism and hatred of all sorts driven out of our society.

"There is no place for this hatred in our country today and we need to work together as one society, one community, to drive it out, this evil which is affecting so many families."

Earlier today, dramatic new footage emerged showing furious crowds shouting out as Osborne was bundled into the back of a police van.

In the chaotic video, officers can be seen telling people to "move back" as the suspect is led to the van, with his hands cuffed in front of him.

Some onlookers film his arrest on their mobile phones, while many others point and yell during the incident in the early hours of today.

The video, captured by an eyewitness, shows an officer apparently checking the suspect's restraints before telling him to sit down inside the van.

Meanwhile, two other officers stand in front of the vehicle's open back doors.

The footage came after a photograph showed the suspect looking battered and bruised after allegedly carrying out the attack.

Witnesses said the man was hit by people at the scene as they held him for at least 15 minutes before police arrived and arrested him.

The London Ambulance Service took nine patients to hospital after the incident, which occurred during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Two of these are said to be in a very serious condition.

Other victims were treated at the scene.

London Ambulance Service Deputy Director of Operations Peter McKenna said in a statement this afternoon: "Our thoughts are with all of those affected by the incident in Finsbury Park and their friends and family.

“We took nine patients to three London hospitals and treated others at the scene for minor injuries.

“We were called to the incident at 12:15am (Monday 19 June) and sent over 60 of our medics including ambulance crews, advanced paramedics, specialist response teams and an advanced trauma team from London’s Air Ambulance.

"The first of our medics arrived within 14 minutes of the first emergency call.

“We managed the incident in a dedicated special operations centre, and, as always, our priority was to assess patients and ensure that they were treated and taken to hospital as soon as possible.

“I’m very proud of all of our staff who responded to this incident alongside our other emergency services colleagues.”

Police said all of the victims were Muslims.

Witnesses described seeing officers giving emergency medical treatment to victims after the incident at 12.20am in Seven Sisters Road.

Many of the victims are believed to have just finished worshipping at the Finsbury Park mosque after breaking the Ramadan fast.

The Metropolitan Police described the attack as a "major incident". They said one person was in custody and there were "a number of casualties".

Police and community leaders have praised those who restrained the van driver and stopped others from attacking him before cops arrived.

Imam Mohammed Mahmoud was hailed for his efforts to calm the chaotic situation in the aftermath of the attack. He was said to have used his body to shield the suspect from the fury of onlookers.

Witnesses claimed the suspect was smiling and waving as he allegedly brought carnage to Seven Sisters Road.

A video posted online apparently showed him give a nonchalant wave as police put him in the back of their vehicle.

Other footage, posted online of the aftermath of the attack, showed a scene of chaos as people tried to help the injured.

One man could been seen giving CPR to a victim in the street while another man's head injury was treated with a makeshift dressing.

People could be heard shouting and screaming amid the chaos and bloodstains were visible on the pavement.

Witnesses at the scene said an elderly man who had collapsed at a bus stop was being tended to when the vehicle struck pedestrians.

One man, who gave his name as Mohin, said his cousin was caught up in the incident.

The 32-year-old told the Press Association: "There were a lot of people in the street, crossing the street, going to mosque for prayers, for forgiveness, just to pray and go home and eat.

"They are doing their usual daily routine - they did not expect a van coming out of nowhere hitting them.

"It was around 11.30pm, 12-ish. I've been living here all my life. As a community, everyone's a family here.

"I initially thought it was my cousin."

Andrew, a courier who did not wish to give his surname, said he saw three people on the floor and at least one of them appeared to be in Muslim dress.

The 45-year-old, of St Albans, Hertfordshire, said he was driving back from a night shift when he saw the aftermath of the collision.

He said: "When I drove past slowly I could count three people on the floor and police were performing CPR on one of them.

"The guy having CPR performed on him was in a gown, ethnic clothing."

Pictures posted on social media showed more than a dozen emergency vehicles near the UKCG Help Centre at the junction of Seven Sisters Road and the A503 Tollington Road.

Finsbury Park mosque used to be infamous as the stamping ground of hook-handed hate preacher Abu Hamza.

A number of terrorists were linked to the mosque, including shoebomber Richard Reid, who attempted to detonate explosives on an American Airlines flight from Paris to Miami in 2001.

It was raided and shut down and later reclaimed by the local Muslim community, who have transformed it into a place which actively promotes better community relations across faiths.

Osborne remains in custody and will be questioned by counter-terrorism officers following this morning's attack.

This is a mindless and evil act. I suppose it doesn't matter in the greater scheme of things, but let's get it right this individual was NOT from Cardiff!!
As a City and nation we don't want to be associated with this sad misguided evil man. He is an Englishman from WSM who has been living in Cardiff for 10 years. Sympathies to all friends and families affected by his act.
Also it deflects from the terrible terrible events in the Grenfell tower block. :bluebird:

Very few people who condem Islam and lay the blame for the recent Islamic attacks would blame all muslims. The majority are good people inspite of their religion not because of it and hiding away from its influence in the recent terrorist attacks does no one any favours.

I see this man's actions as being a direct result of the authorities refusing to acknowledge the issue as well.

It doesnt mean i condone his actions.

To attack innocent people at a time of worship is a truly evil act.

But as longer the british authorities continued to refuse to acknowledge the issue, sadly the more likely it was someone would launch a revenge attack of this nature.

I genuinely fear this wont be the last innoncent blood shed on British streets as we move towards an undiscussed civil war.

I've never asked any ordinary Muslim for an apology but I expect condemnation, just as I condemn this attack. Things are bad now but I fear there's worse to come.

I accept the condemnation from people in this thread. what I don't accept however is individuals such as murphy in the other thread somehow blaming the innocent muslims caught up in the attack for it.

It remains to be seen if he has been radicalized online with far right ideology, like Tom Mair the killer of Jo Cox, but I imagine that's the case.
Islamophobia is sadly a reality and has been fostered by mainstream politicians such as those in UKIP.

Yeah I was shocked to see the reaction on here yesterday. 100% hypocrisy from many quarters which makes any future statement from them pretty redundant.

This man was every bit a terrorist as Khalid Masood who attacked the Westminster Bridge. Far too many were saying "I don't condone it but..." - which is the very thing those same people were accusing muslims of doing when their extremists attack.

This guy is a murderous terrorist targeting civilians. Simple as that.

Try opening your eyes and ears: Diane Abbott called Manchester an incident, she called London Bridge an incident but immediately called this terrorism. It's time for pragmatic politics not looking for offence and bias that simply doesn't exist outside the closed minds of too many on the Left.

I would imagine every City in Britain harbours these sorts of people.

Whether it be Muslims harbouring hate against non Muslims, non Muslims harbouring hate against Muslims, White hating Blacks, Blacks hating Whites etc etc

Now terrorism is sneaking into our society as a frequent occurrence, it may well just become a vessel for a lot of these people to exercise their hatred in the public domain. All as evil and misguided as the next whatever the supposed motive.

seems one allmighty sigh of relief that some people can now deflect from the fact that there has been a long list of terror attacks not just here but throughout the world all in the name of Islam.
we have a problem that is not going away and the vast majority see that. i dont have an answer i dont know if anyone else has either. but pulling a blanket over your head and pointing at some lunatic as evidence of the problem not being islamic extremists certainly isnt it.
millions of people have shown a lot of frustration and a lot of anger this last month there was always a chance it was going to boil over with someone.
ive read that this attack has played into the hands of ISIS. well its certainly played into the hands of those that dont want to recognise the islamic extremist problem thats for sure.

Terror attacks come in all shapes and sizes and for a whole multitude of reasons. The IRA had their reasons and were the terrorists of the 90's, Islam extremism is the latest main terrorist threat but any attacks on the UK Muslim population is also terrorism. It would be utterly ludicrous to suggest otherwise. It is not masking the problem of Islamist terrorism, it is just showing that terror attacks are now going to be a main stay until something changes - with the general public being the collateral damage.

We all (quite rightly) state that the Muslim community need to distance themselves from the extremists acting in their name, yet many dont follow suit when the shoe is on the other foot. This guy is no more "a whack job" than the people who have attacked the public in London recently. He is a terrorist targetting the public to make a political point regarding their beliefs.

There is no "yeah but". The man is an evil terrorist who set out to murder members of the British public. Use this event to practice what you preach and act how you expect other groups to act when someone associated to them attacks someone else. Otherwise anyone pushing that point without displaying what they are preaching no longer have a leg to stand on.

Terrorist. That simple.
