Cardiff City open talks over new deal for Sol Bamba

Thursday 22nd June 2017

Bamba has been a huge hit since Neil Warnock made it one of his first acts to snap up the free agent - and now the club are keen to extend his Bluebirds stay

Cardiff City have opened talks over a new contract for star centre-back Sol Bamba.

Bamba has been a revelation at Cardiff City Stadium since signing as a free agent last October after Neil Warnock made it one of his first acts as Bluebirds boss to snap up the dominant defender.

The 32-year-old has proven a huge hit and still has 12 months remaining on the Bosman deal he signed when arriving in South Wales.

Which Cardiff City players have a future?
Sol Bamba has been a hit at the Bluebirds since signing as a free agent in October following his release from Leeds
But it is understood Cardiff chiefs have opted to begin discussions to tie down the Ivory Coast ace with an extension agreement that would see him commit to Cardiff until the summer of 2019.

And there is confidence from within the club that Bamba’s relationship with Warnock, and his success since joining the club, will see the well-travelled senior man quickly shake hands on extending his stay.

Bamba came to Cardiff with mixed reviews having been released from his contract at Leeds, but instantly underlined his worth with a man of the match and goalscoring performance on his debut against Severnside rivals Bristol City.

And he quickly established himself as one of Warnock’s first picks, playing every game he was available – making 27 appearances in total – before a groin injury in April ended his season early.

Now Bluebirds bosses – following meetings of the club’s transfer committee – want to reward the experienced star with a fresh deal. As well as protecting a rapidly growing asset, the aim is to provide extra security and stability for a defence that is shaping up to be the foundation for Cardiff’s play-off hopes under Warnock this coming season.

Cardiff have already handed a new deal to versatile defender Lee Peltier while are hopeful of agreeing new terms with centre-back Bruno Manga following the expiry of his original Bluebirds contract.

Manga, 28, and his representatives met with club officials after returning from international duty with Gabon last week, with Cardiff’s CEO and executive director Ken Choo saying: “We are still in discussions. But I think it could be a matter of time before we get there. We are working on it. The latest conversation is that he would love to remain here and I don’t think he is interested in going anywhere else. He knows what we are planning here.”

Hearts' attacking full-back Callum Paterson has also arrived this summer as part of Warnock's early transfer business, though the Scotland international Bosman signing could yet be used in a more advanced position.

Cardiff, who also have the likes of promotion-winner Matt Connolly, former Boro and Villa starlet Joe Bennett, Wales international Jazz Richards and even utility man Greg Halford as options at the back, knocked back £3m interest from Sheffield Wednesday in Sean Morrison with both Warnock and owner Vincent Tan adamant the club skipper is a key part of plans.

Some fans have called for a partnership of Bamba and – if Cardiff can seal his signature – Manga to start the new campaign, though Warnock has talked up the influence of Morrison in his side and has hinted at a potential defensive midfield role for Bamba having utilised him in the position to great effect at times last term.

Warnock also knows he has options to play with three central defenders, a tactic he deployed in the 3-0 final day win over eventual play-off winners Huddersfield.

Best for all parties ! 2 year deal with an option to extend. Love Bamba but I think he may struggle in the next few years.
