Cardiff City’s Under-23s were punished by two set pieces and made to settle for a share of the spoils in their preseason friendly against St Austell.

The Bluebirds, who fielded a squad including first team contenders Declan John, Mark Harris and Ibrahim Meite – as well as five trialists – forged ahead twice: first through Harris’ smart finish and then through John’s tap-in.

But St Austell goals from Will Tinsley and Tom Chambers – both a result of deep free-kicks whipped into the Cardiff box – meant it finished level at 2-2.

Many travelling Bluebirds fans had expected more first team involvement in the encounter, with Craig Noone, Stuart O’Keefe and Frederic Gounongbe touted as possible inclusions.

Instead it was Jamie Veale who captained a young side, with new co-manager Andy Legg in the dugout alongside Jarred Harvey.

The pair watched the young Bluebirds make all the first half running and get reward when Harris found acres of space in the box, and slotted home with aplomb.

Cardiff enjoyed the majority of possession all game with Veale, Harris and young right-back Cameron Coxe.

But they struggled to defend set-pieces and were pegged back when Tinsley stabbed beyond keeper Oliver Byrne just after the 30-minute mark.

The second half saw the same formula with the Bluebirds probing, and eventually exploiting some tired St Austell legs when Wales Under-20 star Harris raced down the right and arrowed across for fellow countryman John. The left-back, turned winger, duly tapped home.

But St Austell, who had made the Bluebirds feel very welcome off the pitch, were determined to show some resolve on it. They produced a near carbon copy of their first goal; this time Chambers’ head was the telling touch and Cardiff had to settle for a draw.

The preseason tour continues when the first team face Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on Friday night (7pm), while many of these youngsters will feature in the Under-23s clash at Bideford on Saturday.

There are 4 U23 players I have great hopes for Coxe, Veale, Harris and Weymans. Just hope at least one maybe all 4 make the breakthrough.
