By Dominic Booth

Neil Warnock confirmed full-back Joe Bennett will remain at Cardiff City, having turned down bigger wages from Fulham.

The Bluebirds boss firmly put any further speculation to bed by revealing there were no other full-backs on his radar and Bennett was happy to stay.

Fleetwood Town's Amari'i Bell and Preston North End left-back Greg Cunningham had been reported as possible replacements.

But Bennett is settled in South Wales and, like Sean Morrison, had no intention of leaving a rejuvenated Cardiff now pushing for promotion under Warnock.

"I spoke to Joe yesterday and I’m pleased (he’s staying)," said Warnock.

"It’s been difficult for him as he’s had all sorts thrown at him over the last few days and there was nothing we could do because once they met his clause, it was down to him to say yes or no.

"But like Morrison, Joe’s been playing well, he can see what we’re doing, his wife is eight months pregnant and happy here, there’s a lot of plusses to stay here at the moment, it’s an exciting place.

"He was offered a very good contract but it speaks well of the lad and the club at moment about where we are when you turn that down.

"I put no pressure on him, it was down to him, he had the option. But he’s staying for less money he could have had, on his original contract with two years to go.

On reported interest in other full-backs, the veteran manager said: "Joe's staying. Once we know the situation it puts it to bed, we are delighted to have Joe on board."

Warnock revealed a harmonious Bluebirds squad was behind the decisions of players like Bennett, Morrison and Bruno Manga committing themselves to the club.

Cardiff are flying right now, having won three out of three in the league ahead of Saturday's top of the table clash with Wolves at Molineux.

He added: "I don’t see many players not enjoying themselves. We know we’ll come up against teams where we won’t get the results. But we’ve got to enjoy it when doing well and not get down when it changes. We have to keep a level done.

"We’re happy with the business done, Vincent (Tan) said right from start that 'Bennett didn’t have to go, Neil, if you don't want'. I asked 'does it affect the (Omar) Bogle deal and he said 'no; and that he was very keen on signing him. It doesn’t get much better than that.

"He’s been very forthcoming, he realises we’ve only spent £3million which is probably classified as peanuts in this league. We’re happy with what we’ve spent and players we’ve unearthed."

Also seemed to suggest he won't be playing tomorrow due to fitness

Great news, I think he gives us so much at left back. Not to many good left backs about and while he has his flaws defensively at times he has improved and gives us that balance and bit of quality going forward to link with the wide players.

Staying in his original contract though? Wouldn't a new one new one see off any other teams or bids.

I'm working hard to get back fit for the games coming up after this weekend. Good luck to the boys

Defence is the one area of the team where a settled back 4 can make a difference at any level of football. I don't think it's a coincidence that we haven't conceded a goal this season as the rear guard have a good understanding having played together throughout last season. Even if we found a better replacement than Bennett - which I find very unlikely due to him being an excellent Championship LB - it could take months for a new guy to gel.

On top of this, he seems like a genuinely nice bloke (despite only meeting him once) and adds to the team ethos and morale.

Great news! :bluebird:

Fair play to the lad, shows good character to turn down more money and stay put. :notworthy:

It's astonishing to be honest. I really thought I would never again see a player turn down more money to stay at a club, certainly not Cardiff City. But over the past 3 months I have now seen it THREE TIMES  and the credit for that has to lay at the door of Neil Warnock.

Great news. Makes a refreshing change to see players staying because they are happy and enjoying their football rather than chasing bigger bucks :ayatollah:

Time to get him in a new contract, that has no release fee clauses!

Why increase his wages if he is happy at Cardiff and wants to stay?
If he wants more money (as its alleged) then he would leave.

Joe,
Thrilled to hear that you love being at the club.
I would have been even more thrilled to have heard this from you on Monday or Tuesday.
Guess it took a few days of negotiation and dealing before you realised just how big that love was

The media blew this one way out of proportion.. just because there is release clause and it's met in this day and age people assume your a goner.. look at Suarez and Arsenal.. you can meet the asking price but it's down to the player to meet the personal side of things.

No mention of a wage rise on my post. If he's happy to stay then get him on a new contract with no release fee clause.

It is the norm to provide a new contract when someone rejects a move that is purported to be more lucrative.

It does two things, rewards the loyalty and protects the investment should more suitors come knocking.

I now Warnock says he is happy here on his current contract but to me that just says that Joe may be waiting for a Premier League club to panic buy him come the end of the transfer window.

I applaude his committment to the club but no agent worth his salt would not be using this situation to get his client a better contract UNLESS he thinks there may be bigger and better offers out there.

Without a new contract our investment or perhaps the club are happy to deal at, the supposed, £2Million buy out clause.

I don't think this is over yet. Roll on September.
