NIGEL CLOUGH RINGS CHANGES FOR CUP CLASH

Burton FC

Tuesday 21st August 2017

NIGEL Clough is expected to hand a Brewers debut to new loan signing Sean Scannell as he mixes and matches his squad for this evening's Carabao Cup tie at Cardiff.

Scannell signed too late to play against Birmingham City last Friday but Clough wants to give him game time tonight.

Also in line for a start are Ben Turner (back from suspension), Tom Flanagan and teenager Joe Sbarra, who played in the last round at Oldham.

Clough said: "It's a strange one for BenTurner being out for five matches and then being drawn against his old club, so he will be looking forward to going back down there and playing - but I think he's ready to play against anybody as it's the end of last season since he played a competitive game. We have missed him for the five games and he will definitely start at Cardiff. He won't play the whole game but let's get him back on the pitch and then he's in contention for Saturday.

"Sean Scannell will start, with the view to giving him 45-60 minutes - whatever he needs to be ready for Saturday if selected.

"Joe Sbarra, Connor Ripley, Luke Varney and Tom Flanagan will probably start and we will work it from there. Harry Campbell will be on the bench."

Albion played Cardiff on the opening day of the season, narrowly losing 1-0, part of a flying start to the Championship season for Neil Warnock's side.

Clough said: "We knew at the time we didn't play badly and were unlucky not to get a point. If we had started with the same intensity as we did in the second half against Birmingham, we would have got a positive result out of the Cardiff game as well.

"Tonight, it would be lovely to try and get through and get a home draw and one reasonably local. We will put a team out to try to compete and win."
