NEIL WARNOCK: " AFTER TONIGHTS CUP DEFEAT "

Tue Aug 22, 2017 9:51 pm

Cardiff City 1 Burton Albion 2

NEIL WARNOCK:

"I'm disappointed but not heartbroken," said Warnock.

"It's a blessing that we've not picked up any injuries."

The Cardiff manager introduced first team regulars Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Loic Damour as second half subs in an effort to claw back a 2-0 deficit, following Tom Naylor and Ben Fox's goals for Burton.

And the Bluebirds hit back through Anthony Pilkington, who deflected home Lee Tomlin's free-kick, but Warnock's men couldn't force extra-time.

He added: "At 1-0 I though about Mendez and Loic, and at 2-0 I didn't want to put them on. Then we scored. But we had enough chances didn't we?

"I can't blame the ref for either of the goals but I think it was his first game at this level and I thought he was poor. It's a good job it wasn't a league match!

"There were some plusses, we created chances to win the game but we didn't take them.

"I didn't want to risk anybody tonight, really. It's an important game Saturday before the international break."

Burton boss Nigel Clough was satisfied with his team's display but admitted it was hardly revenge for Albion's 1-0 defeat to Cardiff on the season's opening day, after Warnock had made 10 changes.

Clough said: “It’s a completely different team. Cardiff have rested 10 players and rightly so, when you’re top of the league.

"I’m afraid that’s of far greater importance than the cup.”

Doesn't sound like a manager who stated he wanted a cup run, sorry Neil the team you selected was not up to the mark

I agree, but the biggest problem last night was the midfield, and having watched O'Keefe and Halford in action (if you can call it that) then you can understand why he could not risk any of the regulars, especially when Damour took a clattering in his cameo. I just hope that there are no aftereffects.

O'Keefe and Halford were absolutely awful and God help us if we need to rely on them in a league game.
