Neil Warnock and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing nominated for prestigious awards after Cardiff City's flawless league start

Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock has been nominated for the Championship Manager of the Month award for August after guiding the Bluebirds to five wins from five in the opening month of the 2017-18 campaign.

And winger Nathaniel Mendez-Laing is in the running for the Player of the Month gong after a stunning run that saw him score five goals in all competitions as Cardiff went into the international break at the summit of the second tier.

Warnock has overseen his side secure league wins against Burton, Aston Villa, Sheffield United, Wolves and Queens Park Rangers, with Jose Mourinho's Manchester United being the only other side in either the Premier League or the Football League to currently boast a 100% record.

The Yorkshireman is up against Leeds boss Thomas Christiansen, Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo and Mick McCarthy of Ipswich.

Describing Warnock's success in the opening month of the new season with Cardiff, the EFL commented: "[Warnock] promised the Cardiff fans a tilt at promotion back in the spring and delivered handsomely on that pledge in August, leading his side through a perfect month with five wins from five games to sit proudly atop the Championship table."

New recruit Mendez-Laing has enjoyed a magnificent start to life in the Welsh capital having joined Cardiff on a free transfer from Rochdale in the summer.

The winger netted a brace in the 3-0 demolition job of Aston Villa and also scored in the wins against Wolves and Warnock's former club Sheffield United, as well as bagging the equaliser in the 2-1 EFL Cup first round win over Portsmouth.

An EFL statement on Mendez-Laing's performances read: "[He] began this campaign with the same exciting brand of attacking flair with which he finished last season, albeit at a new club and a division higher.

"His four goals from four starts included a stunning finish in the win over Sheffield United."

Preston's Darnell Fisher, Sheffield United man Billy Sharp and Ipswich striker Martyn Waghorn are all in the running for the award.

The winner of both awards will be announced on Friday, September 8.

Warnock has got to be a shoe in. It would be his 8th award at this level just one behind the record held by Chris Houghton of all people.
