About Preston North End

Preston North End Football Club is a professional association football club located in the Deepdale area of Preston, Lancashire. They play in the Championship, the second tier of the English football league system.

The club was a founding member of the Football League and completed the inaugural season unbeaten to become the first league champions, in the same season winning the FA Cup without conceding a goal to become the first club to achieve the English football "Double". Preston's unbeaten League and Cup season earned them the nickname "The Invincibles".

Preston's most recent major trophy success was their FA Cup victory over Huddersfield Town in 1938. Many notable players have played for the club, including Tom Finney, Bill Shankly, Tommy Docherty, Alan Kelly, Sr. and Graham Alexander.

Based on results achieved in the Football League from 1888–89 to 2015–16, Preston were ranked as the fourth most-successful English football club of all time domestically, while only Notts County had played more Football League games than Preston.

The site of the current Deepdale stadium was first leased by the club in 1875 and was first used for association football in 1878. The biggest attendance seen was 42,684 for a Division One clash with Arsenal in April 1938.

Following a complete reconstruction between 1996 and 2009, the stadium has a seated capacity of 23,404.

Tough game against a decent Championship side.

I'll go with a 1-1 draw again.

We want at least a draw but a win would be great! I think we will be too much for them. We have dirty Leeds behind us so would be nice to stay top, they just ramped up their goal difference after Burton fell asleep probably only because we knocked the stuffing out of them mind! :thumbright: :ayatollah:

I don't think we will win this one. Could be like the Fulham game, and we may have to come from behind to get a hard fought draw. I reckon this is another one where Warnock would take a point right now if it was offered.

I think Damour needs a break and we know Preston are a tough team to break down this season having only conceded 2 goals, but I would probably go with Tomlin as I think he would be the one to do something special and has the ability to create chances and would be perfect against Preston imo.

PNE TEAM NEWS

11/09/17

Manager Alex Neil will give Daniel Johnson every chance to fit for Tuesday’s visit of Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City to Deepdale, after the No.11 missed Saturday’s draw with Barnsley due to an injury picked up in training last week.

Fellow midfielder Ben Pearson is not expected to recover from the injury he suffered at Middlesbrough, which also kept him out of the weekend’s clash with his former club, but will also be monitored.

Paul Gallagher and John Welsh both returned to the squad at the weekend after their respective absences and both will compete for inclusion against the Bluebirds with the likes of Alan Browne and Josh Harrop.

The only guaranteed absentees for the gaffer are Tom Clarke and Greg Cunningham, who continue with their rehabilitation from the respective injuries that should keep them out until the new year.

John Welsh’s substitute appearance at the weekend was his 398th professional game, so he, like team-mate Gallagher who made his 500th appearance at the weekened, is nearing a milestone after his 11 months on the sidelines.

Manager Alex Neil is expecting a tough test on Tuesday night when Cardiff City visit Deepdale.

Neil Warnock's side sit at the top of the division after six games with 16 points a far, but PNE boss Alex Neil knows his side are capable of getting a result and feels it will be crucial for his side to win their battles all over the pitch.

On the challenged posed by the Bluebirds, Neil told iFollow PNE: "I think it's really difficult to play really good football against teams like Cardiff because they are set up to stop you playing. They don't want you to have any part to play in the game and there's nothing wrong with that because we do the same.

"We don't like teams getting on the ball and moving it against us, we want to stop them and we want to force our style of play on them so it's going to be a really hard fought game I think.

"I don't think it's going to be all silky football, I think there will be a few crunching tackles and a few battles on the pitch and I think whoever comes out the right end of those battles will have the best chance of winning the match.

I'm surprised damour hasn't already been rested. He looked concussed to me after the burton cup game and I think I saw him "collapse" around the final whistle too. I'm sure he has had medical tests done to pass him but a week off may do him good to recharge anyway.

Team News

Preston full-back Greg Gunningham will miss out again as he continues to recover from an operation on his knee. Other than that Neil’s side should be fully fit – summer signing Sean Maguire may start again after scoring his first goal for the Lilywhites on Saturday against Barnsley.

The Bluebirds on the other hand may hand a first start to Danny Ward after he scored his first goal for Warnock’s side in replace of Danish striker Kenneth Zohore. Craig Bryson may also make his first start for the club after impressing against Fulham on Saturday.

'Cardiff City are not Real Madrid!' Preston boss Alex Neil suggests Bluebirds praise is over the top

By John Coleman

Tuesday 12th September 2017

Preston North End boss Alex Neil appears to have downplayed Cardiff City's Championship promotion credentials, adding that the reaction to the Bluebirds' sensational start to the season is in danger of going over the top.

Neil Warnock takes his side to Deepdale tonight having overseen five wins and a draw - a run that has left City top of the table.

This evening's contest marks a return to a ground where Cardiff were thumped 3-0 nearly a year ago to the day , but many bookies are likely to be backing Warnock's men this time around.

However, Preston boss Neil says his team are not in the least bit intimidated by their opponents, even going so far as to suggest that the plaudits for the Bluebirds have perhaps gone too far too soon.

He told the Lancashire Evening Post : “Our approach is the same as it has been for every game.

“It is as if we are talking about Cardiff as if they are Real Madrid.

“They are a decent side and have started the season well but I don’t think they are any great shakes in terms of being miles better than anyone else in the league.”

In fact, Neil is expecting a close and bruising encounter that will likely be a nightmare for the man in charge of the highlights reel, although at the same time he is under no illusions about the threat the Bluebirds could pose.

Danny Ward of Cardiff City celebrates scoring against Fulham (Image: Getty Images Europe)
“I don’t think it is going to be one for the football purist if I’m being honest,” he added. “It is going to be a hard-fought game with both sides going toe to toe.

“The game will be different to a point than Barnsley was on Saturday. Cardiff I think will be more aggressive in their starting positions than Barnsley were.

“They also have a bigger presence up top which is something we have to handle.

“Our lads have done great defensively and hopefully that can continue. In terms of preparation, it has been business as usual from Neil for Cardiff's visit."

Midfield duo doubtful through injury as Preston take on leaders Cardiff

2017-09-12

Preston ClubCall

Preston: Midfield duo doubtful through injury as Preston take on leaders Cardiff

Preston may again be without midfielders Ben Pearson and Daniel Johnson against Cardiff.

The duo missed Saturday's draw with Barnsley, with Pearson sidelined by a dead leg and Johnson sustaining an impact injury in training.

Boss Alex Neil had been hopeful of getting at least one back and Johnson will have a late fitness test on his knock but the game is likely to come too soon for Pearson.

North End did have Paul Gallagher (concussion) and John Welsh (calf) return on Saturday, though Tom Clarke (Achilles) and Greg Cunningham (knee) remain out and Declan Rudd (thigh) and Calum Woods (knee) are still working their way back..

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock will consider making changes even though his Sky Bet Championship leaders remain unbeaten.

Aron Gunnarsson has had a heavy early-season workload with Cardiff and Iceland and could be rested.

Lee Tomlin is also in contention to make his first league start for a month with Loic Damour possibly dropping out from the 1-1 draw at Fulham.

Danny Ward - who scored his first Cardiff goal at Fulham - and on-loan midfielder Craig Bryson are pushing for their first Bluebirds' starts.

Championship leaders Cardiff City are back on the road again tonight, with Neill Warnock's side heading to Deepdale to take on Preston North End.

The Bluebirds battled their way to an admirable point away to Fulham at Craven Cottage over the weekend, with Danny Ward coming off the bench to head home his first competitive goal for his new club.

But while the former Rotherham striker has arguably given his boss something to think about, star man Kenneth Zohore is still expected to lead the line for City tonight.

Warnock could well be tempted to tinker in the midfield, with Lee Tomlin believed to be in contention for a first league start in around a month, but the core of his side, who remain unbeaten, is likely to yield few real surprises.
