Many fans are missing the point?

Many people are missing the key point.

My View as a Fan :bluebird:

WE ABSOLUTELY NEED A DEAD BALL SPECIALIST -

who (1) can score his fair share direct from free kicks and

(2) deliver very good balls from free kicks and corners for others to score. Whittingham's record last year is not the issue at all. Either we have someone 'in house' who can deliver what is required or we have to find one who can. Not filling that position might be the difference between promotion or not. A risk that must not be taken. Some believe that Tomlin is the man- but he can't do the job sitting on the bench. Ralls can't score direct so is not the answer. Bennett and Mendez-Laing appear not to be the answer otherwise they would have been given the job.

The bottom line is we have a glaring gap and a risk that must be addressed?

Ralls has a number of assists already with his deliveries from corners. TBH I'm not too worried about this although when we get a penalty I will have to start worrying again after a decade of being assured Whitts would score from the spot.

Worrying too much. The amount of goals we now look like scoring in open play far outweighs any slight reduction there might be from dead-ball situations in my opinion.

Things must be going good if this is what we're worrying about now.

Whittingham barely scored directly from free kicks in the past couple of seasons, and we've already scored at least 3 goals from set pieces this season. Sure Whittingham had a better delivery than Ralls, but as the above poster said, the team are
playing very well and scoring plenty from open play.

Like I said, if this is the glaring gap in our game then we're laughing

I agree the last few seasons we only looked like scoring from set pieces, now we look like we can score every time we attack, which is very nice to see. :ayatollah:

Making too much of this.

It is not a huge problem, and not really a problem at all but it would be good to se someone score from a direct free kick and we will.

As for corners I cannot see a great problem.

If there is one gripe, it is the lack of ball possession, below 40% at Fulham.

It's not an issue, our corners have been pretty decent. Whitts a few years ago scored some screaming free kicks but those type of goals don't seem so regular these days.
My thoughts on the re-branding??

the minute anyone suggests that our dead balls are below par..lots of Whitts wasnt any better remarks fly in..
the thread is not about how much we are missing him..its about do we need a new dead ball specialist.
yes we seem to be scoring from open play at the moment and long may it continue.that does not answer the question though.

Correct not for one minute do I think we have missed Whittingham as for me he is past it, but I am on about a Whitts when he was at his best :thumbright: :bluebird:

Not missing any point at all. The team dynamic d9rs not rely on a so called dead ball specialist. Anyway ralls has been super from corners? This is a non topic for me. As mentioned b4 we have tomlin who is known as a dead ball specialist!

I am sorry but how can you compare goals from open play to corners, free kicks? Why is the focus on more than the other?

Nobody is comparing anything. Nobody apart from Forever Blue sees much of a problem. We look like scoring loads more goals than we have at any time in the last few years. Where they come from is irrelevant, but we will score them. The OP asked if he was worrying too much, the answer is yes in my opinion. We will not miss out on anything due to the lack of a dead-ball 'specialist. We could miss out due to the lack of decent second striker though.... but thats another question

The thread was about having a 'dead ball' specialist so by definition it is focusing more on goals from corners, fee-kicks and penalties. Having such a player is a luxury rather than a necessity as the first target should be trying to score from open play, rather than trying to get a corner or free-kick with the hope of getting a goal.

But a player would have to be sacrificed elsewhere to accommodate a 'dead ball' specialist and then we would have the 'Whitts Paradox' in that we could have a luxury player we might have to carry for 90% of the time.

Not really, just because you have a dead ball specialist doesn't mean it's focusing on goals from there does it.. we don't just go into games trying to get a corner rather than a goal first do you?

The thing I don't get is it doesn't have to be one or the other, we can score goals from open play and dead ball situations.. having one player on the pitch for example say Whitts who could do all that doesn't restrict us from scoring from open play.

Look at Fulham last season with Tom Cairney, attractive football with a dead ball specialist. Spurs and Chelsea with Eriksen and Alonso.
I will.

Totally agree. It's for them right games where a free kick 25 yards out becomes one of our only chances. Having someone who can score in those situations would be amazing.

But they would have to hold their place in the side on merit.
