The big changes Cardiff City will now consider against Sheffield Wednesday after shock Preston drubbing

By Dominic Booth

Wednesday 13th September 2017

The Cardiff City manager has already admitted he got selection wrong in the 3-0 defeat to Preston North End

Cardiff City's 3-0 defeat to Preston North End owed as much to fatigue as anything else, so it seems inevitable Neil Warnock will make changes for Saturday's visit of Sheffield Wednesday to South Wales.

The manager himself accepted that Cardiff weren't at the races, and after naming three successive unchanged sides, it's time for a couple of tweaks.

The Bluebirds are fortunate to be blessed with depth across the board. Warnock brought 10 players to the club in a busy summer transfer window and Saturday's clash at Cardiff City Stadium might present the ideal time for some to make their first league starts.

These are the changes Cardiff could make to keep things fresh versus Wednesday...

Rest Loic Damour

Loic Damour's dynamic style has certainly won admirers in the opening weeks of the season; he was outstanding in the victories over Aston Villa and Wolves and his bustling midfield play has brought a new dimension to Warnock's side.

Yet against both Fulham and Preston the 26-year-old faded, substituted both times on 63 minutes.

Lee Tomlin is still waiting to make his third league start after offering glimpses of his undoubted talents against Burton Albion and Sheffield United, while Craig Bryson has been acquired on loan from Derby County.

Both should be in contention to step into the side on Saturday. Tomlin would add the creativity that Cardiff lacked at Deepdale while Bryson is a neat and tidy central midfield option.

Make some defensive tweaks

Nobody at Cardiff City is pressing the panic button just yet. It's only one defeat.

But the manner of Preston's second and third goals at Deepdale will be cause for some concern among the Bluebirds' coaching staff.

Warnock defended his centre-backs after the game but Sol Bamba didn't look his usual commanding self. The Ivorian has been a totem at the heart of Warnock's defence for nearly 12 months, but he didn't get to grips with Lilywhites' centre-forward Jordan Hugill.

It would be harsh to drop Bamba, but the Bluebirds have a superb back-up in Bruno Manga. It's certainly a dilemma for Warnock to consider. Manga has been waiting patiently for his chance and it may come against Carlos Carvalhal's side this weekend.

It could also be time for a change at full-back. Lee Peltier doesn't offer the same forward threat as Jazz Richards and Warnock may be inclined to hand the Welshman a first start this season in his favoured right-back berth.

Meanwhile, a fair amount of flak has come the way of Neil Etheridge for his Deepdale error. But with Lee Camp still injured, Warnock is unlikely to make any hasty changes in goal — even though Brian Murphy is a very able goalkeeping deputy.

Bring Danny Ward in

Ward can consider himself seriously unlucky to have only played 11 minutes against Preston. It was of course his goal at Fulham that earned the Bluebirds a very useful point and, by Warnock's own admission, the former Rotherham striker has been in red-hot form in training.

The Yorkshireman will surely find a spot in the side for Ward on Saturday. Whether that comes in place of Kenneth Zohore up front remains to be seen. Ward can also play out wide, or in a double-pronged strike attack with Zohore.

What seems certain is the livewire forward will make his first league start for the Bluebirds against the Owls. He's done very little wrong since arriving at Cardiff for a fee of around £

Consider Liam Feeney

The on-loan Blackburn Rovers winger made a sensational impact on his Cardiff debut, crossing for Ward's Fulham leveller and striking the woodwork in added time. His pace appeared to trouble the West London outfit and it was no surprise to see him introduced as Warnock looked to change the game against Preston.

But how do you shoehorn Feeney into the side? Junior Hoilett and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing have both been excellent and can take so much credit for Cardiff's rapid start to the season, dovetailing effectively with Zohore to create a menacing front three.

It's wonderful to have Feeney as a different option and Warnock may choose to deploy the 31-year-old against Sheffield Wednesday.

Think he will start feeney but then to have Mendez or hoilett coming on in second half is a good boost

Tomlin probably should also start and maybe ward , will he drop Zohore? Again an other big sub to bring on if he don't start Zohore

Didnt go to Preston but thought that Houlliet looked jaded at Fulham-(though he was kicked three times in the first twenty minutes by their no 2 so that may have had an impact) and Damour wasn't at his best either. I would bring in Bryson who looks full of energy for Darmour and possibly Danny Ward for Houlliet.

50/50 on the team last night, yes if it's not broke don't fix it but then again you come across different teams with different styles of play and formations so surely Warnock and co should have looked at Preston games and tried to nullify their threat?
I will.
And before anyone els gets in there no im not an ideot abroad

Can't start Tomlin against Sheff Wed in a midfield 3, needs Damour or Bryson playing infront of Gunnarsson/Ralls to close down Bannan like Damour did to Kevin McDonald at Fulham. If we give Bannan space to control the game then we may as well not play. Tomlin doesn't have the work rate to track him all game.
