But now clubs only want instant success and its only smaller clubs want them in hope of unearthing a talent to sell as an income, it's certainly not to play for club! Crewe are the past masters of it but look where its got them? (Nowhere) :o

Problem with Crewe is they really had no other income. They didn't have a large benefactor or any owner with a little bit of dosh. They essentially have had to sell these kids young and for relatively small fees as soon they can to keep afloat. Someone like us can hold on till these players are 20,21,22 and sell for a more commanding fee.

The 16-year-old made his Newport debut in the League Cup against Southend United, coming on as a second half substitute at the start of August.

He has reportedly spent a bit of time training at the Norwich camp, and the Canaries have now shown interest in the youngster.

Jay was released while in our under 16s side. This is yet another talented youngster we've let go. Regan Poole is another we let go to Newport who has of course joined Manchester United. With Tom Lockyer at Bristol Rovers also impressing, how many talented kids have we let go???

None yet. Tom Lockyer would be nowhere near out first team and is playing at a lower level. Neither of the other two are playing regular first team football yet. Start this thread again when they have achieved something.

Exactly all clubs let go youngsters who make it later in their careers....the 3 mentioned above have achieved absolutely nothing so far

Clubs are questioning the viability of academies due to fact they dont produce enough talented kids for 1st team! Huddersfields owner is contemplating disbanding theirs, not sure what fuss is about as all clubs release kids every season for whatever reason that's life at a football club.

been questioning the point of us having one for years..
all that money then when it gets to under 18s /19s etc we just ship in new kids who have failed at bigger academies..
Wales as a nation let alone Cardiff has at no point mass produced young talented footballers.
going right back to our begingings as a league club in the 20s the 1st team {just like every other club } wasnt full of young locals ,it was full of english ,scotish and irish imports.

We're a small nation, wouldn't expect us to mass produce at any point in time. The only countries that do mass produce these talents have massive populations so a larger pool of players are available.[/

correct..we are a small nation..and Cardiff is just a part of it..to suggest that our academy is leaving numerous talented players go who progress elsewhere is a bit silly..

But they have...

wind up..?

Me? Never ;) But in all honesty I think people are missing my point. I never claimed these players are guaranteed stardom but they obviously have potential so I'm just wondering why we've let them go. I've only named 3 from the top of my head who are being talked about and to be hones that's a lot because in each year of an academy you'd be happy for 1 to graduate really.

so the answer is?..do we keep every academy player and end up with more of them than we have fans..just in case one of them is good enough to play for bristol rovers in 4 years time ..or god forbid gets a trial at norwich.?
besides we should be the last club to complain..imagine being a Wolves fan having allowed NML to leave..
the day to moan is the day an ex academy player comes here and tears us a new one like he did to them.

Must be hundreds of kids we've let go if the amount of times we debate this issue on here is anything to go by? Anyway the kid has gone nowhere other than newport.

Don't think anyone mentioned this was a massive move, so not quite sure why you're pulling out the sarcasm. BUT Norwich are pretty much our level. So why are we letting go this guy when they think he's good enough? He's been to a few clubs in the Championship and spent time with them.

The headline said it was mate hence the sarcasm.

Just said it was a big move. Which it is for a League 2 16 year old moving to a large Championship club.

personally i wish all these youngsters every success. if one of the many hundreds of them makes it,so be it..
swings and roundabouts...we look for talent that other clubs might not have fully appreciated..other clubs look at players left go by us...
this academy thread keeps popping up with not much evidence of lost talent.
pretty sure if someone listed players we have allowed to leave and how well they have gone on to do..
then listed players we have picked up after release elsewhere...we would be quids in..

Its about standard of the player? If man u let a kid goe its because not good enough for them? Same at city maybe several years later they devlope into usefull standard but how long do you keep them though ? same thing applies to man u (pogba) but i struggle to know of any that have made it when we've let them go?

i agree...its not rocket science is it...
the wrong assumption is because a few of those released find clubs the wrong ones have been allowed to leave ..
