What last night's World Cup results mean for Wales' qualifying hopes as England and Scotland do Chris Coleman a favour -

Friday 6th October 2017

Qualifying wins for England and Scotland on Thursday night have done Wales a big favour in their mission to reach the World Cup in Russia.

England's 1-0 win over Slovenia and Scotland's victory over Slovakia by the same scoreline means Wales' fate is almost in their own hands.

Two wins against Georgia and Republic of Ireland will virtually guarantee them a play-off spot at least, barring a big swing in goal difference in favour of the Scots.

One unlucky runner-up will miss out on the play-offs and there were fears that side would come from Wales' group.

UEFA's 'mini league' ranks each group's second placed team based on points accrued, discounting results against the bottom sides.

As it stands, Wales are in ninth place on eight points but have a game in hand on second-placed Denmark (13 points), third-placed Northern Ireland (13 points), fifth-placed Iceland (13 points) and sixth-placed Scotland (11 points)

It means Wales can move above Scotland on goal difference with a win against Georgia in Tbilisi tonight. Then a victory over Martin O'Neill's Ireland on Monday night would see Chris Coleman's troops finish on 14 mini-league points, which should be enough provided Scotland don't thrash Slovenia in Ljubijana and eclipse Wales' goal difference.

Other second-placed teams Sweden and Bosnia-Herzegovina are playing on Saturday, while Italy (13 points) host FYR Macedonia tonight looking to secure their play-off spot. One of Portugal or Switzerland is a shoo-in from Group B.

Of course, Wales can still top their own group if Serbia drop points, but a runners-up spot seems more likely.

This is how the 'mini league' looks now

How the mini league looks now, before Wales' game in Georgia
The fixtures for Wales to watch and the results they need

Friday October 6

Austria vs Serbia — a draw or Austria win would be ideal for Wales to keep going their hopes of topping Group D

Republic of Ireland vs Moldova — Wales would love Ireland to drop points here

Saturday October 7

Sweden vs Luxembourg — unlikely, but any dropped points from Sweden would boost Wales' mini-league hopes

Belarus v Netherlands — it's unclear yet whether Luxembourg or Belarus will finish bottom of Group A, thus we don't know which points get expunged. Sweden and Netherlands clash on the last day in a play-off decider, with France topping the group.

Bosnia Herzegovina vs Belgium — a crucial game in Group H and crucial for Wales too; a Belgium win would be ideal

Sunday October 8

Norway vs Northern Ireland — it would help Wales if Michael O'Neill's team lost in Oslo

Slovenia vs Scotland — provided Scotland don't win this, Wales will be guaranteed a play-off if they win their games

Monday October 9

Serbia vs Georgia — lots of variables before this one even kicks off, but Wales will be watching events in Belgrade closely

Serbia are a point clear at the top and will qualify automatically if they beat Georgia.

However, if they lose, the winners of the Wales-Republic match will qualify, while a draw could send Wales through on goal difference.

From the nine European qualifying groups, the eight second-placed teams with the best records will advance to November's two-legged play-offs.

Wales are currently ranked fifth in those standings as they aim to reach the World Cup for the first time since 1958.
