Wales could finish top!

Fri Oct 06, 2017 11:43 am

I know its unlikely, but if we do win our two games -and tonight will be really tough- we could sneak into top spot. Serbia will do well to get a point in Austria let alone win and that may leave them needing to beat Georgia at home. They should do it but Georgia are no pushover as they should have taken 4 points off Ireland not just the one and we were hanging on against them at home.

Serbia v georgia is not a gimme.
The pressure on serbia will be huge knowing they need to win to stay top.
Wouldnt suprise me if that game is a draw georgia are a hard team to break down. Wales could well end top of the table monday night

Wales still remain in the hunt to secure automatic qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia after the penultimate round of qualifying matches.

Tom Lawrence's stunning 49th minute strike earned Chris Coleman's side a vital 1-0 win over Georgia in Tbilisi, a result that ensured Wales' play-off hopes were still firmly alive.

And Serbia's inability to beat Austria in Vienna means Coleman's troops can still nick top spot in Group D if results go their way on Monday night.

Luka Milivojevic's 11th minute opener was cancelled out by former Cardiff City striker Guido Burgstaller's effort, and West Ham man Marko Arnautovic briefly put the hosts ahead.

Manchester United man Nemanja Matic struck an equaliser in the 83rd minute, but substitute Louis Schaub netted a last-gasp winner as Austria earned a 3-2 victory for the home side.
It means if Serbia lose or draw at home to Georgia in Belgrade on Monday, Wales will nick top spot - securing automatic qualification to the World Cup in the process - if they claim all three points against Republic of Ireland at Cardiff City Stadium.

Wales could even claim first place if they draw against Martin O'Neill's side, as long as Serbia suffer an unlikely loss at home to Georgia by two or more goals.

Is that on goals scored? In the first instance?

As far as Saturday is concerned, all eyes will be on Group H where Belgium and Cyprus can both do Wales a huge favour if they can claim victories against Bosnia and Greece respectively.

If those results happen to pan out in Wales' favour, Bosnia would remain second with eight mini-league points while Greece and Cyprus would have 10 and seven respectively, all fewer than Wales' tally of 11.

It would mean that Wales would be able to draw with Ireland and still earn a play-off spot.

yes they have scored a lot more than us..so with equal GD it would then be goals scored.

Serbia are a point clear at the top and will qualify automatically if they beat Georgia.

However, if they lose, the winners of the Wales-Republic match will qualify, while a draw could send Wales through on goal difference.

From the nine European qualifying groups, the eight second-placed teams with the best records will advance to November's two-legged play-offs.

Wales are currently ranked fifth in those standings as they aim to reach the World Cup for the first time since 1958.

Not sure but won't a draw by Cyprus be enough tonight? That would put Greece on 11 and a draw by Wales on Monday night would give us 12. Greece's last game is against the bottom team so no points to be gained in the "mini league" so we finish above them.
