One significant source of encouragement as Birmingham City prepare for Cardiff clash

Birmingham Mail

Wednesday 11th October 2017

Steve Cotterill knows Birmingham City will have to upset the form book to take maximum points in his first game in charge on Friday night.

Blues take on league leaders Cardiff City at St Andrew's in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Cotterill will be desperate to get off to a positive start and steer his new side out of the bottom three, but Neil Warnock's Cardiff will provide stern opposition.

The Bluebirds have lost just once this term, earning 24 points from their opening 11 matches - and conceding only nine goals along the way.

They've also had no trouble finding the net, scoring 17 goals to Blues' seven.

Cotterill's managerial debut in B9 looks an unenviable match-up but a cursory glance at the history books may offer the 53-year-old, and Blues fans, some encouragement.

That's because Cardiff haven't scored at St Andrew's for almost five years.

Joe Mason was the last player to get on the scoresheet for the Welsh side away at Birmingham in a 1-0 win back in January 2013.

Here's a look back at the games that have taken place in the second city since - in the hope that Cardiff fire another blank in three days' time.

Blues 0 Cardiff 0 - August 6, 2016

Gary Rowett's side kicked off their Championship campaign with a well-earned point.

Tomasz Kuszczak produced a fine save to beat away Peter Whittingham's effort to ensure to scores were level at the break after Frederic Gounongbe had missed from close range for the visitors.

Blues improved at the interval and it was Bluebirds stopper David Marshall's time to shine in the second half as he brilliantly denied Diego Fabbrini and Jack Storer.

Blues 1 Cardiff 0 - December 18, 2015

Paul Caddis was the hero as Blues took maximum points in controversial circumstances.

James Vaughan's goal-bound effort was blocked by defender Matthew Connolly and referee David Coote pointed to the spot after he thought a hand was used.

Replays afterwards suggested the Cardiff centre half had been struck in the face but Caddis had already scored from 12 yards to claim a first victory in two months for the hosts.

A similar slice of luck on Friday wouldn't go amiss.

Blues 0 Cardiff 0 - November 8, 2014

The scoreline didn't reflect what was an action-packed affair at St Andrew's with a goal contentiously ruled out for offside and a late red card.

Both incidents involved the same player.

First, Wes Thomas saw his 64th minute drive from Demarai Gray's cross chalked after the linesman had raised his flag, before the striker was given his marching orders for allegedly striking Sean Morrison in the face.

Clayton Donaldson also came close for Blues, who remained unbeaten for the third match into Rowett's tenure.
