The curious case of Frederic Gounongbe resolved as Cardiff City confirm striker is still in Neil Warnock's plans -

Friday 13th October 2017

Cardiff City outcast Frederic Gounongbe will remain part of Neil Warnock's first team set-up this season.

The Benin international has not featured for the Bluebirds in almost a year and is yet to score a competitive goal for the club.

The impressive form of Danish forward Kenneth Zohore — most notably in the latter half of the 2016/17 campaign — ensured Gounongbe was deemed surplus to requirements by Warnock last term.

And he is yet to feature for the club this season, with Danny Ward providing the main competition for last season's top scorer Zohore.

But Gounongbe is back in full training with his Cardiff teammates having been sidelined with an injury and it is understood that he will remain a part of the first team setup this season.

The 29-year-old — whose contract expires at the end of the current campaign — joined the Bluebirds from Belgian outfit Westerlo during the 2016 summer transfer window and featured in nine of the 12 games overseen by axed boss Paul Trollope last season.

His competitive debut came in the 0-0 draw with tonight's opponents Birmingham on the opening day of the previous campaign, with Gounongbe missing a sitter in a frustrating encounter that typified Trollope's disastrous reign.

He made substitute appearances in the games against Huddersfield and Aston Villa under Warnock in November last year while his most recent outing for the Bluebirds saw him play 70 minutes in the 0-0 draw with Brighton at Cardiff City Stadium on December 3.

Zohore subsequently became Warnock's first-choice striker following the poor form of both Gounongbe and Rickie Lambert, and the 23-year-old rewarded his faith by scoring 12 Championship goals after Christmas.

The Dane has already netted three times this season while Warnock's attacking options are set to receive a boost later this year when Rhys Healey recovers from the injury that has kept him sidelined since February.

Interesting the article says he is still in Warnocks plans but no quote from anyone saying that? I don't think we will see him again.
