'Disgusting scenes' at London Bridge as police clash with Millwall and Birmingham City fans ahead of game

Daily Mirror

Sunday 22nd October 2017

There were "disgusting" scenes as Millwall and Birmingham City fans clashed in the street like a "riot" before today's match.

Footage and photos posted online appear to show police officers being shoved as they surrounded Birmingham fans during a "stand-off" between rival supporters outside London Bridge station.

Witnesses described scenes of "madness", saying alcohol containers were thrown, smoke was in the air and a number of people were detained while fans taunted each other under a heavy police presence.

Witnesses said the area was "shut down" by police, who formed human barriers to separate train passengers from football supporters, and escorted Birmingham City fans to the Den football stadium in Bermondsey, south London.

One Twitter user wrote: "The road outside of London Bridge appears to be shut down by football louts lobbing alcohol. Yay for masculinity."

Another user added: "Stranded at London bridge....kettled to allow the Birmingham fans to get to the game on time.....bloody joke."

One posted: "Thank you to all the Millwall fans at London Bridge who've just exposed my son to more swearing and aggression than he's ever seen b4".

Another wrote: "Interesting scenes at London Bridge station. Police with dogs separating passengers from a crowd of football supporters getting off a train."

And another added: "Smoke and arrests in London Bridge? Anyone know what's happening I need to use the loo there?!!!"

Several witnesses criticised the fans for the disorder.

One wrote: "Toxic masculinity is: being at London Bridge right now witnessing the massive police presence dedicated solely to the bonkers legions of aggro football fans."

Another added: "Borough High St & London Bridge was a thoroughly unpleasant area today due to large number of lary Millwall and Birmingham City supporters."

And another wrote: "Toxic masculinity on display at London Bridge right now. And all in the name of football. Disgusting scenes."

One Twitter user, mistaking the Birmingham City fans for Chelsea fans, wrote: "Stand off between #Chelsea & #Millwall fans by London Bridge. Police everywhere and in lines separating them. Grown men! Idiots."

Fans had gathered hours before the Championship fixture was due to kick off at 5.30pm.

I remember going to watch Cardiff v West Ham at the old Ninian Park prior to Defoe moving to Spurs, and the line of police after the game was unreal, the supporters were properly trying to get to each other.

Secondly West Ham v Millwall few seasons back the hammers fans got pushed back into a market on green street, bad idea - they started launching tomatoes and veg from the stalls at the Millwall fans- mental

Not condoning any violence but anyone else think it's crazy that this got coverage in a few National papers when a peaceful march through London of over 30K plus football lads with no arrests didn't get a mention?

Pathetic, grown overweight men and vile foul mouthed women acting like complete and utter twats. Living in the stone age, always hands up jumping up and down mouthing off in groups. Pathetic at their age.

In fairness, there didn't seem to be any trouble, it was just high spirits after a few beers whilst being escorted to the ground. If anyone really wanted trouble, London Bridge would have been the last place they would have gone.

There were a few Millwall fans outside each of the pubs though and that could have ignited something. I'm surprised that the police allowed them to remain so close to the away fans.

As for those classless women, the blokes with them want locking up themselves for allowing them to embarrass not only themselves but also the entire travelling contingent. Imagine being stuck near one of them inside the ground? You'd be suicidal by half time.

It did in the mail, independent and one other paper. But not that much.

Aye I forgot the Independant had done a hatchet job on it - was one of the most blatantly biased pieces of journalism I've ever seen. Mail was more fair handed and I think the 3rd paper was probably the Evening Standard?

Guarantee this gets 10 x more coverage though. Peaceful marches with 30K plus don't make sensationalist headlines whilst a few idiots, couple of hundred at the most will be splashed everywhere as the average football fan gets demonized.
