Everywhere in Paris is expensive, you can get cheap if go to the outskirts but then its like downtown Raqqa.

I had a weekend there and stayed in Mont Parnasse (spelling 
) on the outskirts but rail and bus links are great.

That's not true, there are some very reasonably priced and quite nice hostels around fairy Central. Tbh they are more like small hotels than hostels.
