Dispute between Bristol City fans and club over attempts at St George’s Cross display during Cardiff City game

Bristol Post

Sunday 5th December 2017

General view as Bristol City fans wave flags during the Sky Bet Championship match between Bristol City and Barnsley at Ashton Gate on April 22, 2017

A dispute has broken out between a group of Bristol City fans and management after they attempted to create a St George’s Cross display during the match against Cardiff City.

The fans said the display cost around £500 and that the plan for the match on Saturday (November 4) had been vetoed by the club.

But the club has responded saying that the group applied for red and white squares on cardboard, not the English flag and that it was deemed "antagonistic" to the Welsh fans.

Section 82, a collection of City fans, had planned a huge St George’s Cross display using cardboard squares to be unveiled just before the Remembrance minute's silence before City’s win against Cardiff at Ashton Gate.

The managing director of Ashton Gate Stadium, Mark Kelly, said: “I’m personally very disappointed by the events surrounding the attempted display for the game against Cardiff City on Saturday. The stadium was asked originally by S82 if there would be any objection to providing red and white square on cardboard to present in the South Stand before kick-off, just ahead of the minute’s silence for Remembrance.

“Ashton Gate’s head of security allowed late access to the stadium on Friday evening for the group to distribute the red and white cards. At this time, we expected to see a pattern of a red poppy on a white background, or something similar. However, it became apparent that what was actually being laid out was a St George’s Cross.”

The display, which would have been put on in the stadiums South Stand is believed to have been funded by fans at a cost of £500.

There were concerns the St George's Cross could cause trouble with Welsh fans before the minute silence (Image: LM)
Section 82 said stewards had rearranged the cards intended to be used to create the huge flag across the stand.

The group uploaded a video of stewards moving the cards around on the morning of the match.

Section82 tweets
Mr Kelly went on to explain the reasons the flag was deemed a problem. He said: “After dialogue with Ashton Gate’s head of security, the EFL [English Football League] and Avon and Somerset Police, all were agreed that positioning the St George’s Cross directly opposite the Wales fans, ahead of the minute’s silence, had the potential to be deeply antagonistic.”

The club said that there were attempts to come to an agreement with Section 82 for a mosaic of red and white cards but that the group refused.

Mr Kelly added: “It was clear from social media posts throughout Friday evening that the motive was always to display a St George’s Cross during the minute’s silence for Remembrance Day.

“The Bristol City V Cardiff game has been identified by the police and SAG (Safety Advisory Group) as a high risk event and was the subject of an extraordinary SAG meeting and a change of date due to perceived risk of trouble during the game at the stadium.

“It is the duty of the stadium team to provide a safe environment for all and mitigate any risk or potential flashpoint. Whilst reviewing this decision, the stadium team consulted with the EFL, AV&S Police and the Cardiff City safety manager, all of whom supported the decision as a positive risk aversion.”

When they held up their coloured bits of card it was impossible to see what it was meant to be - obviously the people who laid them on the seats weren't the brightest

The City fans responded with a very valid question "What the f*cking hell is that?" as nobody could tell what the hell it was.

And if the Wurzels were so worried about antagonising the City fans, why play the infamous Scott Murray match on their "big" screen, complete with commentary, just before the game. Did they think that would help us all chill out?

Load of bollocks.

It did say that the club deliberately moved the cards around to muddle it up. It says don5 want to antagonise the Cardiff fans. FFS They can put up what they like. The new culture of what if it offends someone ?

just re read the article having read your post.
how mental is that...the fans spend time and money doing this george cross...the safety group say its a bad idea..so instead of collecting the cards they get stewards to re arrange them so it displays nothing..
fans turn up and like good little soldiers hold cards up..
how to make chimps out of your own fans

First off you think that guy innocently ended up down a "closed" road for Cardiff fans to walk down? Gonna be a big man accept the punishment I say.

Secondly the d##khead filming and uploading it has probably endured his buddy will get a custodial sentence having basically handed the proof to the old bill.

Three arrested after Bristol City and Cardiff City football fans clash

Bristol Post

Monday 6th November 2017

Three football fans were arrested after scenes of violence “spoiled” Bristol City’s 2-1 league win over fierce rivals Cardiff City .

Avon and Somerset Police confirmed the number of arrests after video footage was posted on social media of fans clashing in the street after the final whistle.

One fan was arrested for being drunk and disorderly while the other two were detained for public order offences.

A force spokesperson thanked the majority of fans for their good behaviour but said a small minority intent on causing problems had spoiled the day.

In a statement, the police said: “Football fans from Bristol City and Cardiff City have been praised for their good behaviour after a small minority from both clubs tried to spoil the day.

“Three arrests were made on the day – one for someone being drunk and disorderly and two for public order offences – following minor disorder involving small sections of both groups of fans.

“Further investigation will be carried out and CCTV studied, which may results in further arrests.

“Where we are able to show individuals have been responsible for football-related anti-social behaviour or violence, we will pursue football banning orders.”

The match, which kicked off at Ashton Gate on Saturday (November 4) at noon, was graded by police as a “risk game”.

Dozens of officers were required to help police the fixture, which the Robins won 2-1.

In their statement, the force did not specify if any of those involved in the Ashton Road incident were among those arrested but said follow-up enquiries were ongoing.

“We dealt with three small pockets of disorder involving supporters of both clubs,” the statement continued.

“We take football-related disorder seriously and will always deal with the offenders. We will be making follow up enquiries.

“Currently in Avon and Somerset there are 70 people with football banning orders.”

At least tell the truth mate. It wasn't closed to Bristol fans at all. I didn't see any trouble but when I walked down the road just before the incident and it was at least 80% Bristol fans. Lets hope the clowns get dealt with and they allow us to continue making our own way to this fixture.

There are some major hypocrites on here.

It’s bad enough these incidents take place without increasing the amount of publicity they get.
