Over the last 10 - 20 years Women’s football across the globe has gone from strength to strength, especially within the English game, where they boast two levels of pro/semi pro teams.
The likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and most recently Manchester City building up top teams of both British and foreign female superstars. The latter also sold one star player, Toni Duggan to Spanish giants FC Barcelona, also an England Rep.
However - although the women’s European cup final was hosted in Cardiff last season, is the game as strong as it should/could be in Wales?
England’s last manager was Taffs Wells born Mark Sampson so there could be plenty of know how to tap into at the welsh disposal despite his fall from grace.
None of the big sides though have a committed academy side, and trials to set strong regional sides have easily fallen apart due to poor structure and support. The FAW to seem increasingly keen to invest in the game from U16 up to the senior women’s side BUT there seems to be a missing piece trying to get this into schools and more clubs.
Cambrian & Clydach Academy are trying to change that - in January 2018 they will be holding trials for there first official foray into girls football, but could the main welsh clubs being doing more with Rep squad development?
Bristol City WFC have always been a strong pro academy centralised team, leading in the wales and South west to produce more female talent - so why no fuss with The welsh sides??
