Cardiff City fans' banning orders collapse as arrests also fall

Home Office Figures Just Released

Thursday 23rd November 2017

Wolves had the most banning orders...

... Birmingham the most arrests

The number of new football banning orders issued to Cardiff City fans collapsed last season, while arrests were down too.

The figures have been revealed in data released by the Home Office to Wales Online.

The police stats show Bluebirds supporters were issued with just one new banning order last season - significantly down from the 10 new ones that they received the previous year.

On arrests, Cardiff fans had their collars felt 14 times during 2016-17, down from 16 the season before.

Of those arrests, only one was at Cardiff City Stadium.

Cardiff's hierarchy have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to try to shed the club of its past reputation.

The banning order figure demonstrates how those efforts are paying off.

Wolves fans received the most new banning orders with 32. They are followed by West Ham with 30, Manchester United with 24 and Barnsley on 22.

Football banning orders are preventative measures issued by the courts either following a conviction for a football offence, or following complaint by a local police force, British Transport Police, or the Crown Prosecution Service.

A total of 517 new football banning orders were issued last season, down from the 542 which were issued the previous year (2015/16).

West Ham United: 67

Leeds United: 61

Aston Villa: 52

A total of 1,638 football arrests were made last season. That represents a 14 per cent drop from the previous season when 1,895 were made.

Birmingham City fans were the most arrested with 72 in total. West Ham fans had their collars felt 67 times, Leeds fans 61 and Aston Villa 52.

Just 45% of the arrest figures supplied by the Home Office were of home fans.

A Cardiff spokesman said: “The matchday environment and the security and welfare of our supporters continues to be of paramount important to us.

“As a club, we are committed to ensuring that any anti-social behaviour is eradicated and encourage any supporters who witness concerning behaviour – either physical or verbal - to report it to their nearest steward or a member of staff.”

Also to note – out of those 14 arrests, only 1 was at home.
