Athletic Bilbao interesting

Sat Dec 02, 2017 8:57 pm

Athletic bilbao have a policy where only players native to the Basque Country are eligible to play for them. This means that every player who pulls on the famous red and white shirt is drawn from the communities of the Basque Country and Navarre in Spain and the Northern Basque Country in France. can't be many top clubs in the world doing this

Its Atletico Madrid, not Athletico.

Bilbao use the anglicised version of Athletic due to their heritage and links to the UK when formed.

It's pretty cool they have never suffered a relegation despite not being able to sign a Welshman :ayatollah: :bluescarf:

Think this used to be standard policy for all the Basque Clubs, wasn’t Toshack the first Real Sociedad manager to sign a non Basque.
Bilbao is a fantastic city to visit.

We played them in a pre-season friendly a few years ago. Think their official name is Athletic Club. That's what their fans had on their scarves, anyway.
